AMRIT: A Pillar of Care
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) has established a national benchmark by operating 14 AMRIT pharmacies, the highest count
within any public sector hospital throughout India. These vital outlets are strategically positioned to provide round-the-clock access to essential medications. PGI Director, Professor Vivek Lal, heralded these pharmacies as a significant boost to patient care, likening the broader Ayushman Bharat initiative to a powerful engine driving the institute's substantial patient volume, with AMRIT pharmacies serving as its indispensable foundation by guaranteeing treatment affordability. Prof. Lal emphasized that every patient is entitled to guaranteed quality and cost-effectiveness in their treatment. The AMRIT initiative has consequently become a cornerstone of patient-centric care and a crucial support system for individuals covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This network ensures that financial barriers do not impede necessary medical interventions, underscoring a commitment to comprehensive patient well-being.
Expanding Access and Availability
With 14 AMRIT outlets already operational, PGI is actively working towards establishing two to three additional facilities to further enhance the reach of affordable medicines to every corner. Notably, in high-demand areas such as cardiology and emergency services, these pharmacies are now available 24/7, with specific provisions to assist Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries. This expansion is not driven by commercial interests but by a genuine commitment to patient welfare, ensuring that essential medicines are accessible precisely when needed. The director acknowledged that while no system is entirely perfect, PGI is dedicated to optimizing the efficiency and reliability of these pharmacies. Ongoing efforts are focused on addressing challenges like temporary stockouts and optimizing refund processes, with active communication maintained with the ministry to streamline operations. This proactive approach aims to maintain uninterrupted patient care, especially for those under the Ayushman Bharat program, by ensuring optimal stock levels and seamless functioning.
Institutional Progress and Reforms
PGI has consistently upheld its legacy of exceptional patient care since its inception in 1963, offering services on par with global standards. The institute is continuously enhancing its infrastructure and operational systems in alignment with national health objectives. Professor Lal highlighted that institutional reforms are progressing, even amidst inherent resistance to change, moving forward with determination. Many initiatives, once perceived as challenging, such as extending AMRIT pharmacy services to critical care units, have now become a reality. These transformations, though often understated, are bringing daily benefits to patients. Furthermore, recent improvements in financial processes have expedited procurement and enhanced service delivery, directly contributing to the expansion and effectiveness of the AMRIT pharmacy network. The upcoming visit by the Union Health Minister on April 27 for the convocation ceremony will also see the inauguration of significant new facilities, including the Neurosciences Centre and Advanced Maternal and Child Health Centre, further bolstering PGI's capacity to deliver superior patient care.
