Enhanced Connectivity at Silk Board
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) is embarking on a significant infrastructure project at the bustling Silk Board Junction to dramatically improve
commuter convenience by creating a vital link between two key Metro corridors. The initiative involves the construction of an elevated pedestrian walkway, designed to bridge the gap between the operational Yellow Line and the upcoming Blue Line. This project represents a substantial investment in urban transit, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 59 crore, encompassing not only the structural construction but also the aesthetic finishing touches. The need for this walkway is particularly pronounced at Silk Board, as it will not offer direct in-station transfers like other major interchange points, making an external connection essential for seamless travel between the lines. This development is a testament to BMRCL's commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and promoting efficient public transportation within the city.
Innovative Travelator Feature
A groundbreaking feature of this new 250-meter elevated walkway at Silk Board Junction will be the inclusion of Bengaluru's very first travelator within the Metro network. A travelator, akin to a moving sidewalk often found in large airports, is a slow-moving conveyor belt designed to assist pedestrians in traversing longer distances with minimal effort. This innovative addition is poised to offer unparalleled convenience for commuters, particularly those transferring between the Yellow Line (currently running from Bommasandra to RV Road) and the future Blue Line which will eventually extend to Kempegowda International Airport. The travelator will significantly reduce the time and physical exertion required to switch between these crucial Metro routes, making the journey smoother and more accessible. Its integration marks a significant technological upgrade for the city's public transit system, prioritizing passenger comfort and efficiency.
Project Timeline and Bidding
The construction of this vital 250-meter elevated walkway, including its innovative travelator, is currently in its initial stages with BMRCL having formally invited bids for the civil, structural, and finishing works. An official statement indicated that the land acquisition for the project is actively underway. Following the conclusion of the bidding period, which allows interested companies to submit their proposals, the selection of a suitable bidder is expected to take approximately one to two months. It's important to note that only the tender has been floated thus far, and the detailed technical specifications for the project are still being finalized. The Blue Line station, which the walkway will connect to, is projected for completion by December 2026, with onward connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport anticipated by 2027, highlighting the phased approach to this expansive urban development.
