Enhanced Connectivity Network
Prayagraj is on the cusp of a significant urban transformation with an expanded Metro system, now slated to span approximately 60 kilometers. This enhanced
network is designed to dramatically improve intra-city travel and alleviate the growing burden of traffic congestion. A key development in this revised plan is the inclusion of the Prayagraj airport and the revered Sangam area as integral stops, boosting connectivity to these crucial locations. Originally envisioned as a 44 km network, the project's scope has been substantially increased to better serve the city's evolving needs. Furthermore, a strategic decision has been made to implement this as a full-fledged Metro Rail system rather than the initially proposed Metro Lite. This shift is largely attributed to economic feasibility, particularly the availability of locally manufactured coaches and operational technologies, which reduces reliance on expensive imported components. This upgraded infrastructure is projected to not only streamline daily commutes but also support Prayagraj's ongoing urban growth and development.
Two Major Corridors
The ambitious Metro project for Prayagraj will unfold along two primary corridors, designed to cover diverse stretches of the city and its surroundings. The first corridor, initially planned to run from Bamrauli to Jhunsi City Lake over 23 km, has undergone a significant revision and extension. It will now extend to approximately 39 km, incorporating direct access to the Prayagraj airport and even ropeway connectivity to the significant Sangam site. This expansion ensures that major transit hubs and spiritually important locations are well-integrated into the network. The second corridor will stretch from Shantipuram to Chheoki, covering a distance of roughly 21 km, linking different residential and commercial zones. In its initial phase, the Bamrauli-Jhunsi stretch will see the construction of 26 stations, while the Shantipuram-Chheoki corridor will feature 19 stations. Each station is planned to have a brief stoppage time of one to two minutes, optimizing passenger flow and travel efficiency. Track-laying operations are anticipated to commence in August, following likely state government approval between April and May, and a fresh survey to pinpoint new station locations.
Station Count and Cost
The expanded Metro network for Prayagraj will feature an increased number of stations, rising from the initial proposal of 39 to a total of 45. This increase in stations is a direct result of the enhanced network length and the strategic inclusion of more stops to better serve the commuting public. Concurrently, the overall project cost is now expected to surpass Rs 12,000 crore, reflecting the expanded scope and infrastructure development. This investment underscores the commitment to creating a comprehensive and efficient public transportation system for the city. The network is meticulously designed to connect vital transit points, including the main railway stations, central bus stands, the airport, and the historically significant Sangam area. Additionally, it aims to link burgeoning residential areas and developing commercial hubs, fostering balanced urban development across the Sangam city and its periphery.
Project Approvals and Land
The realization of Prayagraj's extensive Metro project involves intricate planning and coordination among various authorities. Multiple high-level meetings have been conducted involving key stakeholders such as the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, the Prayagraj Development Authority, and relevant defence authorities, along with technical consultants. A critical aspect of the alignment passes through land designated for defence purposes, necessitating the acquisition of formal approvals from the Defence Ministry via its LMS portal before the Detailed Project Report (DPR) can be finalized. For the essential depot development, a joint inspection was carried out on February 16, 2026. This inspection identified suitable land parcels for the project's operational needs: near Triveni Structures on Mirzapur Road for Corridor 2, and within the Khanupur area for Corridor 1. These locations are deemed strategic for maintaining and operating the Metro infrastructure effectively.
Impact on Urban Growth
Officials are confident that the upgraded Metro project will deliver substantial benefits to Prayagraj, extending beyond mere transportation improvements. The network is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across both the trans-Ganga and trans-Yamuna regions of the city. This improved access will play a pivotal role in mitigating urban congestion, a growing concern as Prayagraj experiences rapid population growth and expansion. By providing a reliable and efficient public transport alternative, the Metro will encourage greater use of public transit, thereby reducing the number of private vehicles on the roads.
