KTM seems to be on the verge of releasing a hardcore adventure motorcycle, potentially christened the 690 Rally. Recent sightings in Austria showcase a machine
that strongly evokes the spirit of KTM's renowned Dakar Rally bikes. Its aesthetic is defined by a tall, rally-style windscreen, slender bodywork, and an overall aggressive stance engineered for serious off-road excursions. This isn't your typical comfortable tourer; the focus here is squarely on delivering an uncompromised off-road performance experience. The fitting of aggressive knobby tires and an extended-travel suspension system further emphasizes its rugged terrain capabilities, making it far more at home on challenging landscapes than on long stretches of highway.
Performance & Practicality
The suspension setup on this new offering is handled by fully adjustable WP components, featuring a robust 48mm front fork to tackle unpredictable terrain. Braking is managed by single disc setups on both wheels, a choice likely made to keep overall weight down while still ensuring sufficient stopping power. A significant upgrade over its Enduro R counterpart is the fuel tank capacity, which appears to be increased to an estimated 16 to 18 litres from the standard 13 litres. This enhancement is crucial for extending its range, particularly beneficial for extended off-road expeditions. Furthermore, the inclusion of features such as a TFT display, a dual-section fuel filler cap, and a two-piece seat with provisions for passenger footrests suggests KTM is aiming for a delicate equilibrium between elite rally performance and everyday usability, making it more than just a track-focused machine.
Engine & Chassis
Underneath its purpose-built exterior, the upcoming motorcycle is expected to share its mechanical underpinnings with the established KTM 690 Enduro R. This means it will likely house the potent 693cc LC4 single-cylinder engine, a powerplant celebrated for its performance. In its current iteration on the Enduro R, this engine delivers approximately 79 bhp and 73 Nm of torque, positioning it as one of the most powerful single-cylinder engines currently in production. It's reasonable to anticipate similar, if not identical, performance figures for the 690 Rally. The motorcycle also benefits from the Enduro R's lightweight chassis, which is integral to its agility and its formidable off-road prowess, ensuring that it remains nimble and responsive when navigating difficult terrain.
