Myanmar Quake Details
On Tuesday evening, a substantial seismic event registered a magnitude of 5.8, with its epicentre located in Myanmar. The German Research Centre for Geosciences
reported the initial tremor occurred at approximately 9:04 pm Indian Standard Time. The earthquake's origin point was recorded at a latitude of 20.51°N and a longitude of 93.96°E, with the seismic activity originating at a depth of 55 kilometers. Following this primary event, a secondary tremor was detected by the same research centre at 9:21:29 pm IST. This subsequent shake also originated at a significant depth, measured at 50 kilometers, indicating a complex seismic pattern in the region. Fortunately, as of the latest reports, no casualties have been officially confirmed in connection with this earthquake.
Kolkata Tremor Experience
The seismic waves from the Myanmar earthquake were strong enough to be felt by residents in Kolkata, generating significant concern and discussion. Numerous social media users took to platforms like X to share their experiences of the tremors. One account vividly described the sensation, stating, "Earthquake in Kolkata. Whole restaurant was shaking in Park Street." This testimonial highlights the intensity of the shaking felt in a public space. Another individual posed a question to the online community, "Earthquake in Kolkata? Did anyone else feel it?" This query underscores the widespread nature of the tremors and the shared experience of uncertainty among those who felt the ground move. The reports from Kolkata indicate that the earthquake's impact extended well beyond its immediate epicentre.
Related Seismic Activity
Prior to the Myanmar earthquake, a separate seismic event was registered in Bangladesh on the same Tuesday. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 striking the region. This earlier tremor occurred at a considerable depth of 150 kilometers. The NCS provided specific details of this event via an X post, noting that it took place on March 2, 2026, at 04:06:46 IST. The geographical coordinates for this Bangladesh earthquake were 22.84°N latitude and 89.01°E longitude. While distinct from the Myanmar earthquake, the occurrence of multiple seismic events in close proximity and relative geographic proximity highlights the active tectonic nature of the broader South Asian region.
