A New Rail Connection
Indian Railways has officially launched a new bi-weekly express train service that directly connects the bustling metropolis of Mumbai with Bengaluru,
a milestone achievement as it's the first new direct train on this route in approximately 30 years. This significant development, inaugurated with a virtual flag-off by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and attended by local dignitaries, aims to bridge the travel gap on one of India's busiest railway corridors. The introduction of this service is poised to ease travel challenges for passengers and significantly improve connectivity, benefiting not only direct travelers but also those heading to and from important intermediate hubs like Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, and Pune, thereby fostering better regional integration and economic activity.
Route, Distance, and Schedule
Operating under train numbers 16553 and 16554, this new express train traverses a substantial distance of approximately 1,210 kilometers. The journey is designed to be completed in roughly 24 hours and 5 minutes, offering an efficient overnight travel experience. Regular services commenced with the train departing from SMVT Bengaluru on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8:35 PM, arriving at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai the following day at 8:40 PM. Conversely, the return service from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus departs on Sundays and Wednesdays at 11:15 PM, reaching SMVT Bengaluru by 10:30 PM on the subsequent Monday or Thursday. These timings are crafted to facilitate business and leisure travel, accommodating a variety of passenger needs and schedules.

Coach Composition and Frequency
This new express train is configured with a modern rake comprising 17 LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, designed for enhanced safety and comfort. The coach breakdown includes one AC 2-Tier coach, four AC 3-Tier coaches, and six Sleeper Class coaches, catering to different budget and comfort preferences. Additionally, there are four General Second Class coaches for more economical travel. Essential utility coaches are also part of the composition: one Second Class luggage-cum-brake van, which is specially designed to be Divyangjan-friendly, and one luggage-cum-generator car-cum-brake van. The train operates as a bi-weekly service, providing regular connectivity on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Bengaluru and Sundays and Wednesdays from Mumbai.

Fares for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route have been established to offer various options. A ticket for Sleeper Class is priced at Rs 750, providing an affordable travel solution. For those seeking air-conditioned comfort, the AC 3-Tier fare is Rs 1,880, while the more premium AC 2-Tier accommodation costs Rs 2,575. These fares are designed to be competitive while reflecting the service's convenience and speed.
