New Charging Hub Unveiled
The electric vehicle charging landscape in India has seen a notable expansion with the recent inauguration of a new charging facility in Navi Mumbai. This
site represents the fifth Supercharger outlet for electric cars in the country. Strategically positioned approximately 8 kilometers from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and about 30 kilometers from Mumbai’s primary international airport, this facility is located within the underground parking area of the Nexus Seawoods mall. The choice of this particular location is attributed to its advantageous position for drivers who frequently travel between the major metropolitan areas of Mumbai and Pune. This new addition underscores the growing commitment to enhancing EV infrastructure in key urban centers.
Advanced Charging Capabilities
This newly established charging station in Navi Mumbai is equipped with a combination of advanced charging technologies. It features four DC fast chargers, designed to provide rapid charging for electric vehicles, alongside four 11kW AC chargers, which offer a more standard charging solution. In total, this brings the number of Tesla-branded chargers across India to 34, encompassing both DC fast chargers and the standard AC chargers. The company currently operates a network of 20 Superchargers and 14 Destination Chargers (which are the 11kW AC chargers). Beyond this Navi Mumbai location, existing charging points are concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, areas identified as strategically important for the brand's customer base.
Pricing and Accessibility
For users of the charging network, specific pricing structures are in place. The high-speed DC Superchargers are priced at Rs 24 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while the 11kW AC chargers are available at Rs 14 per kWh. It is important to note that, at present, access to these charging facilities is exclusively reserved for owners of the brand's vehicles. This differs from practices in some other global markets where these chargers might be accessible to a wider range of electric vehicles. All charging stations are managed and maintained directly by the brand, without the involvement of any third-party operators. There are no complimentary charging sessions provided as part of new vehicle purchases in India.
Future Expansion Plans
The company has indicated plans to further expand its charging infrastructure, with a focus on high-traffic corridors connecting major metropolitan hubs across India. Potential routes for future installations include those between cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, and Chandigarh, among others. This strategic expansion aims to create a more robust and accessible charging network, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicle charging solutions in the country. The current network, bolstered by this new Navi Mumbai site, is a step towards realizing a more comprehensive charging ecosystem for electric car owners.
