The latest iteration of the DesertX is set to impress with a completely reimagined heart: a brand-new 890cc V-twin engine. This sophisticated motor replaces
the previous Testastretta unit and is cleverly integrated as a load-bearing element within a newly engineered aluminum monocoque frame. This structural shift not only sheds weight but also significantly bolsters the bike's rigidity, culminating in a more compact yet incredibly robust machine, perfectly suited for the rigors of extensive exploration and demanding journeys. The liquid-cooled, 90-degree V2 powerplant is rated to deliver a formidable 110 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, complemented by a healthy 92 Nm of torque peaking at 7,000 rpm. A standout feature of this engine's performance is its accessible torque curve, with Ducati asserting that an impressive 70 percent of its maximum torque is available right from 3,000 rpm. This low-end grunt is invaluable for maintaining steady momentum when tackling steep inclines or navigating challenging off-road terrains, ensuring predictable and manageable power delivery.
Extended Intervals, Enhanced Durability
Beyond its impressive power output, the new engine introduces practical advancements designed to keep riders on the move for longer periods. A notable upgrade is the adoption of conventional valve springs, a choice that dramatically extends the service intervals to a substantial 45,000 km. Furthermore, routine oil changes are now required less frequently, with a recommendation of every 15,000 km or on a biennial basis. This focus on reduced maintenance translates to more time spent riding and less time in the workshop, a significant benefit for those undertaking long-distance expeditions or frequently venturing into remote locations where service access might be limited. Chassis and Suspension Refinements
The chassis of the DesertX has also undergone considerable enhancement, moving beyond mere cosmetic alterations. The innovative monocoque frame now cleverly incorporates the airbox, providing remarkably easy access to air filters. This thoughtful design element is a boon for riders who frequently encounter dusty conditions, allowing for quicker and simpler maintenance on the trail. For suspension duties, the bike is equipped with premium KYB components. Up front, 46 mm upside-down forks offer a generous 230 mm of travel, adept at smoothing out rough terrain. At the rear, a fully adjustable monoshock provides 220 mm of travel. Braking and Wheel Assembly
Stopping power on the new DesertX is provided by a robust braking system developed by Brembo, ensuring riders can confidently manage their speed in all conditions. The front end features twin 305 mm discs, gripped by four-piston calipers, offering strong and progressive deceleration. This setup is further enhanced by a radial master cylinder and a newly designed lever, which collectively provide superior modulation and feel, allowing for precise control of braking input. Complementing the braking system are the durable spoked wheels, maintaining the established 21-inch front and 18-inch rear configuration. These wheels are shod with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, a choice that underscores the motorcycle's serious off-road capabilities and readiness for challenging terrain, reinforcing its identity as a true adventure machine.
