Tragic Demise in Madhyamgram
In a grave turn of events, Chandranath Rath, a key personal assistant to West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was tragically shot and killed in the
Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday night. Rath, considered a close confidant of Adhikari, was reportedly ambushed inside his vehicle and sustained severe injuries from close-range gunfire, specifically to his chest and head. Despite being rushed to a nearby medical facility, he succumbed to his wounds during treatment. The incident immediately triggered widespread concern and a heightened security presence in the locality, prompting an immediate launch of an investigation by the local police to ascertain the full details of the fatal encounter.
Exchange of Fire
Initial reports emerging from the scene suggest that the incident was not a solitary act but involved an exchange of gunfire, with at least four shots being discharged prior to Rath's fatal wounding. A companion traveling with Rath also sustained injuries during this confrontation and was promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention. Eyewitness accounts or preliminary findings indicate that the assailant arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire. Sources suggest that three to four bullets struck Rath. The precise sequence of events leading to the shooting remains under scrutiny by law enforcement agencies, who are diligently working to piece together the narrative and identify the perpetrators responsible for this violent act.
Political Condemnations Erupt
Following the assassination, the political landscape in West Bengal witnessed a swift and intense reaction. BJP leader and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa vehemently condemned the killing and pointed fingers directly at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stating, "These TMC goons are not just TMC goons, they have become Bangladeshi goons." Adding to this, BJP leader Keya Ghosh remarked on the victim's close association with Suvendu Adhikari and his pivotal role in Adhikari's significant win in the Bhabanipur constituency against Mamata Banerjee. Ghosh asserted that the attack was a retaliatory act fueled by 'rage, frustration and anger' from the TMC due to Adhikari's electoral success. Conversely, the TMC also issued a statement through an X post, strongly denouncing the 'brutal murder' of Chandranath Rath. They also highlighted what they described as 'post-poll violence' allegedly carried out by BJP-backed individuals, which they claim has resulted in the deaths of three other TMC workers. The TMC demanded a court-monitored CBI investigation to ensure accountability.
Context of Post-Poll Violence
This unsettling event unfolds against a backdrop of reported post-poll violence across West Bengal. The state has witnessed a series of aggressive incidents following the BJP's significant electoral victory, where the party secured 207 out of 294 Assembly seats, ending the Trinamool Congress's fifteen-year tenure in power. In response to the escalating tensions, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had previously issued a directive on Tuesday to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Central Armed Police Forces, emphasizing a 'zero tolerance' approach towards any instances of post-poll violence. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari had previously addressed allegations against the BJP, challenging accusers to provide specific details and downplaying the scale of reported incidents, while the West Bengal BJP cautioned against TMC 'Gunda Vahini' impersonating their workers to sow discord.
