A New Era Begins
Air India has initiated a significant fleet modernization, commencing with the comprehensive refurbishment of its first Boeing 787-8 aircraft, registered
as VT-ANT. This thorough “nose-to-tail” transformation aims to elevate the passenger journey, aligning the aircraft with contemporary aviation standards and offering a decidedly more sophisticated travel environment. The extensive work undertaken reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing the airline's fleet and passenger offerings, setting the stage for an improved travel experience on a global scale. This initial Dreamliner upgrade is a pivotal element in the airline's ongoing revitalization efforts.
Three-Class Revolution
The interior configuration of this particular Dreamliner has undergone a dramatic evolution, moving from a previous two-class setup to an advanced three-class cabin. This new arrangement now encompasses Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy, mirroring the modern standards present in Air India’s other recently updated aircraft. This strategic shift ensures a consistent and premium experience across its fleet, catering to diverse passenger needs and preferences. The introduction of a distinct Premium Economy section, alongside the enhanced Business and Economy cabins, signifies a deliberate effort to offer greater choice and refined comfort for all travellers.
Business Class Opulence
The pinnacle of this retrofit is the newly introduced Business Class, featuring 20 exclusive suites arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. Each suite is designed to offer unparalleled privacy, complete with sliding doors, fully reclining flat beds, and expansive 4K screens for an immersive entertainment experience. Thoughtful amenities such as integrated vanity mirrors and adjustable ambient lighting are incorporated to emulate the comfort and luxury of a high-end hotel, transforming long-haul travel into a truly indulgent affair. This segment is engineered for passengers seeking the utmost in comfort and personal space during their journey.
Premium Economy Comfort
A new Premium Economy cabin has been meticulously added, comprising 25 seats in a 2-3-2 layout. These seats are engineered to provide enhanced comfort, boasting increased legroom, a more generous recline, and integrated calf rests, significantly improving the travel experience for those desiring extra space without the premium price tag. Passengers will also benefit from larger personal screens, making this section an attractive option for travellers seeking a superior level of comfort and amenities compared to standard Economy, bridging the gap between the two classes.
Enhanced Economy Seating
Even the Economy Class has seen substantial improvements, now equipped with 205 ergonomically designed seats. These seats feature improved cushioning for extended comfort on longer flights, along with personal entertainment screens and convenient charging ports. The focus here is on making the economy experience more pleasant and connected, ensuring passengers can relax and stay entertained throughout their journey. These upgrades aim to provide a more supportive and enjoyable environment for the majority of travellers onboard.
Next-Gen Entertainment
Across all three cabins, passengers will now experience an advanced inflight entertainment system powered by Thales’ AVANT Up technology. This system delivers sharper 4K QLED HDR screens, offering superior visual clarity and faster response times for a more seamless and engaging viewing experience. The updated system aims to provide a vast library of content with high-definition quality, ensuring entertainment is always accessible and enjoyable, regardless of the class of travel. This technological leap is central to the modernized cabin ambiance.
Cabin Ambiance Upgrade
Beyond seating and entertainment, the aircraft's entire interior has been refreshed with new carpets, curtains, and wall panels, alongside updated lavatory facilities. Even the galleys and overhead bins have been refurbished, contributing to an overall cleaner, more contemporary, and sophisticated cabin aesthetic. This meticulous attention to detail extends to every aspect of the interior design, creating a cohesive and visually appealing environment that complements the advanced technological features and seating enhancements onboard.
New Livery & Effort
The aircraft now proudly displays Air India’s updated livery, a result of a detailed repainting process undertaken in the United States, symbolizing the airline's rebranding and its renewed focus on premium service. This comprehensive retrofit involved over 12,800 man-hours spread across 45 days, covering everything from the removal of outdated interiors to the installation of new systems. This extensive project is part of a larger $400 million program to upgrade the airline's fleet, with plans to retrofit 25 more Dreamliners and subsequently upgrade its Boeing 777 aircraft, promising enhanced travel for over 300 weekly international flights.
