A New Beginning
Air India introduced its custom-built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, representing a major milestone in its transformation. This aircraft arrived in Delhi from
Boeing's factory in Everett, Washington, on January 11. It's the first widebody aircraft from a large order placed three years prior. This launch is a key part of Air India's 5-year Vihaan.AI transformation program. Furthermore, nearly 100 new and leased aircraft have joined the Air India group’s fleet since privatization. This aircraft signifies the airline's commitment to offering a world-class travel experience, combining advanced technology with the well-known warmth of Indian hospitality.
Cabin Class Features
The new Boeing 787-9 features three cabin classes: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy, accommodating a total of 296 seats. Business Class offers a 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen and a full reclined bed, measuring 79 inches in length, or a chaise lounge. The Premium Economy seats provide ample legroom with a 38-inch pitch and a 7-inch recline, a 6-way adjustable headrest, and individually adjustable calf and leg rests. Each Premium Economy seat is equipped with a 13.3-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen, Type A and C fast-charging ports, and a bottle holder. Economy Class offers an 11.6-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen and Type A and C charging ports.
Entertainment & Comfort
Across all cabin classes, the new aircraft provides Bluetooth headphone pairing, wireless charging capabilities, and mood lighting inspired by ancient Indian wellness traditions. This design incorporates Air India's signature design details, enhancing the overall passenger experience. The airline has plans to standardize the new cabin interiors across its Boeing 787 fleet. This means retrofitting all 26 existing Boeing 787-8 aircraft with the same interiors and entertainment systems. The retrofit program is already underway, with the first upgraded aircraft expected to return to service soon. The remaining fleet should be completed by mid-2027.
Mumbai-Frankfurt Route
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is set to begin service on the Mumbai-Frankfurt route from February 1. This launch marks a significant upgrade for passengers traveling on this route. This introduction of the new aircraft represents a dedication to improving the travel experience, with the aim of providing comfort, design, and advanced technology. The deployment on the Mumbai-Frankfurt route is the initial phase of integrating these enhanced features across the entire network. Passengers can look forward to enjoying these enhancements as Air India continues to modernize its fleet and services.
