Farewell Old Cards
As of May 1st, Chennai Metro is retiring its existing travel cards, marking the end of an era for commuters who have relied on them since 2015. These original
cards were designed to simplify ticket purchases and minimize waiting times at stations, offering a convenient cashless alternative with a notable 20% fare reduction. They were valid for up to five years, proving particularly useful for daily commuters. This upcoming change is part of a larger national effort to integrate public transportation systems, paving the way for a more interconnected transit experience across the city.
Introducing Singara Card
The Singara Chennai Card, launched on April 14, 2023, is set to become the primary payment method for Chennai Metro. This new card is a key component of a national strategy to unify public transport, allowing passengers to utilize a single payment platform for various transit modes, eliminating the need for separate tickets or cards for each service. The transition to this new system has been carefully managed over the past year. Initially, the ability to recharge the older cards was progressively removed from stations. Commuters were then able to use their remaining balance on the old cards for both Metro journeys and parking fees, ensuring a gradual and less disruptive shift before the complete discontinuation.
Seamless Transition Advised
With old Metro travel cards ceasing to be valid from May 1st, the Singara Chennai Card is now the exclusive option for card-based payments within the Metro network, aligning Chennai with the nationwide goal of accessible, unified transit. Passengers are strongly encouraged to transfer any leftover funds from their old cards to alternative digital platforms before the deadline. This can be done by moving the balance to the Chennai Metro Rail mobile app as a Stored Value Pass (SVP) or transferring it to the new National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), which is designed for multi-modal transportation use. This proactive step ensures no value is lost and facilitates a smooth entry into the new payment system.
Future of Commuting
Officials anticipate that this system overhaul will significantly enhance the efficiency and user-friendliness of daily commutes. By centralizing payment methods and reducing reliance on multiple individual cards, the new Singara Chennai Card system is geared towards providing passengers with an integrated, hassle-free, and technologically advanced travel experience throughout Chennai. This move represents a significant step towards modernizing public transport and delivering a superior commuting journey for all users.
