Unpleasant Discovery Aboard
A premium train journey on the Vande Bharat Express, specifically the route from Patna to Tatanagar, took an alarming turn for passengers due to a serious
lapse in food quality. The situation escalated after a traveler shared a video that quickly gained traction online. This footage revealed what appeared to be insects present within a sealed cup of Amul dahi, a dairy product meant for consumption. The incident wasn't isolated, as other passengers corroborated similar disturbing findings in their meals, raising significant concerns about the hygiene standards maintained during food preparation and service on this esteemed train. The immediate aftermath saw the passenger attempting to report the issue to the train staff, but, according to their account, no satisfactory action was taken at the time.
Swift Rail Action
The viral video and subsequent passenger complaints prompted an immediate and decisive reaction from the Ministry of Railways. Recognizing the gravity of the food safety violation, authorities moved swiftly to address the situation. As a direct consequence of the incident, the contract for food services with the responsible catering company has been terminated. Furthermore, a significant financial penalty of Rs 50 Lakh has been levied against the caterer. Adding to the repercussions, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has also been fined Rs 10 Lakh. This dual penalization underscores the Railways' commitment to upholding stringent standards for passenger well-being and service quality, particularly on premium services like the Vande Bharat trains.
Prioritizing Safety
In response to the public outcry and the disseminated video, the Ministry of Railways officially acknowledged the complaint regarding food quality on train number 21896, the Patna – Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express, dated March 15, 2026. Their statement confirmed that the matter was being treated with utmost seriousness, detailing the penalties imposed on both IRCTC and the service provider, including the termination of the catering contract. An Indian Railways spokesperson emphasized that passenger safety and service quality are paramount, and such issues are not taken lightly. The spokesperson reiterated that robust rules and regulations are in place to ensure impeccable standards, especially on premium trains where passengers have elevated expectations regarding comfort, hygiene, and overall service delivery. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of maintaining these standards rigorously.
