The latest sightings of the second-generation Kia Sonet provide a tantalizing glimpse into its impending redesign, slated for a 2027 debut. Despite being
heavily cloaked, several new design characteristics are discernible, particularly at the front. The fascia appears to have undergone a substantial revision, drawing inspiration from the more recent Seltos model. A wider grille now stretches across the entirety of the front, contributing to a more commanding presence. The front bumper also seems to sport smoother, more sculpted lines compared to the current iteration. Furthermore, the headlights seem to adopt a design language similar to the second-generation Hyundai Venue, with distinct eyebrow-shaped LED daytime running lights positioned above the main clusters. Even the alloy wheel designs appear to echo those found on other contemporary Kia vehicles, hinting at a cohesive brand aesthetic. At the rear, the new Sonet is anticipated to showcase updated LED tail-light signatures, promising a modern and distinctive illumination pattern. A sunroof is also visible on the test vehicle, though its exact configuration—whether a panoramic unit or a standard single-pane—remains to be confirmed.
Platform Evolution & Space
A significant shift is on the horizon for the upcoming Sonet, as it's expected to transition from its current K2 platform to the more advanced K1 architecture. This same platform currently underpins models like the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Venue. This strategic move is anticipated to yield substantial benefits, particularly in optimizing interior space. The primary aim of this platform upgrade is to enhance rear-seat legroom and overall passenger comfort, addressing a noted area for improvement in the present model. Beyond passenger comfort, this platform change also aligns with safety aspirations. The manufacturer is targeting a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating for the next-generation Sonet, a benchmark already achieved by its platform siblings, the Venue and Seltos. This suggests a strengthened structural integrity and an enhanced suite of safety features designed to meet stringent crash-test standards.
Interior Upgrades & Powertrain Retention
The cabin of the next-generation Sonet is poised for a comprehensive overhaul, with expectations of a redesigned dashboard layout. This update is likely to incorporate more premium materials, enhancing the overall perceived quality and tactile experience. Accompanying these material upgrades, the infotainment system is expected to grow in size, offering a more immersive and user-friendly interface. Complementing this, a digital driver display is also anticipated, providing enhanced information and customization options for the driver. The inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) remains a point of keen interest, especially considering its recent removal from the Seltos. It is yet to be determined if Kia will reintroduce a Level 2 ADAS suite with the new Sonet. Under the hood, the upcoming model is likely to retain its existing and well-received powertrain options. This includes the 83hp 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the more potent 120hp 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, and the torquey 116hp 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both manual and automatic transmission choices are expected to be carried forward, ensuring familiarity for existing customers. Furthermore, a strong-hybrid variant is reportedly in development, utilizing the 1.2-litre petrol engine. While not expected at the initial launch, this fuel-efficient option could arrive later, potentially around 2028 or 2029, though its specific technical details are still under wraps.
