New Train Service Launched
Indian Railways has introduced a significant new bi-weekly express train service, establishing a direct rail link between Bengaluru and Mumbai. This launch
marks a pivotal moment, as it's the second direct train connecting these bustling metropolises, with the first, Udyan Express, having been in operation for nearly 30 years. The introduction of this service is poised to alleviate travel challenges along one of India's most frequented passenger routes. It aims to enhance connectivity for travelers journeying to and from Bengaluru, the strategically important Hubballi-Dharwad region, Belagavi, and Pune, culminating in Mumbai. The operational details confirm that this express train will cover an approximate distance of 1,210 kilometers, completing its journey in about 24 hours and 5 minutes. The train numbers designated for this route are 16553 and 16554. The inaugural special run, however, operated under train number 06557. Regular services are scheduled to commence with departures from Bengaluru on May 23rd and return journeys from Mumbai beginning on May 24th.
Journey Details & Timings
The SMVT Bengaluru-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, designated as Train No 16553, operates twice a week, departing from SMVT Bengaluru every Tuesday and Saturday at 8:35 pm. It is scheduled to arrive at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai at 8:40 pm the following day. In the reverse direction, Train No 16554 will depart from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus every Sunday and Wednesday at 11:15 pm, reaching SMVT Bengaluru at 10:30 pm on Monday and Thursday, respectively. This bi-weekly express train comprises 17 LHB coaches. The service is meticulously managed and maintained by the South Western Railway zone. The train's itinerary includes a total of 15 stops between its origin and destination, facilitating travel for passengers across various intermediate stations. The journey duration is designed to be approximately 24 hours and 5 minutes for the 1,210 km route, offering an efficient overnight travel option between the two major cities.
Extensive Station Stops
The SMVT Bengaluru-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express makes its journey with a strategic network of 15 stops, ensuring broad accessibility. Heading from Bengaluru, the train will halt at Tumakuru, Davangere, SSS Hubballi Junction, Dharwad, Belagavi, Miraj Junction, Sangli, Karad, Satara, Lonand, Pune, Lonavala, Karjat, and Kalyan before reaching its final destination in Mumbai at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The return journey from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus follows a similar extensive list of stops, ensuring passengers across these regions benefit from the new service. These stops are crucial for passenger convenience and are strategically placed to connect important commercial and cultural hubs. The inclusion of stations like Pune, a major educational and IT center, and the key cities within Karnataka further amplifies the train's utility for a diverse range of travelers, including business commuters, students, and tourists.
Fare Structure & Coach Options
Travelers utilizing the new Bengaluru-Mumbai express train will find a structured fare system designed to accommodate different comfort preferences and budgets. The ticket prices are set at Rs 750 for Sleeper Class, offering an economical option for longer journeys. For those seeking enhanced comfort and amenities, the AC 3-Tier coach is priced at Rs 1,880. Higher up the comfort scale, the AC 2-Tier coach will be available for Rs 2,575. The train's rake consists of 17 LHB coaches, thoughtfully configured to serve various passenger needs. This includes one AC 2-Tier coach, four AC 3-Tier coaches, and six Sleeper Class coaches. Additionally, the composition features four General Second Class coaches for unreserved travel, alongside essential utility vehicles like a Second Class luggage-cum-brake van equipped with a compartment for Divyangjan (differently-abled) passengers, and a luggage-cum-generator car-cum-brake van to ensure smooth operations and amenities throughout the journey.

The South Western Railway anticipates that this new train service will significantly bolster economic activity and tourism between Karnataka and Maharashtra. It is expected to cater to a wide spectrum of passengers, including those traveling for business ventures, seeking employment opportunities, pursuing educational goals, or embarking on leisure trips. Dr. Manjunath Kanamadi, Chief Public Relations Officer of SWR, highlighted that the service will markedly improve the connectivity between several vital commercial and cultural centers situated along its path. This enhanced connectivity is a critical factor in fostering regional growth and facilitating easier movement of people and goods. Furthermore, the Ministry of Railways has indicated plans for future enhancements, including the potential introduction of a faster Vande Bharat sleeper train on the same route, which would further revolutionize travel on this busy corridor.
