Addressing Traffic Woes
Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (LBS Marg) is notorious for heavy traffic, causing daily headaches for commuters. To combat these issues, the BMC has proposed
a 4.2-kilometer flyover. This project aims to provide relief to the thousands of people who navigate this congested route every day. The planned flyover will be a four-lane, two-way structure, extending from Kalpana Talkies in Kurla West to Pankhe Shah Baba Dargah in Ghatkopar West. This strategic placement is intended to bypass several bottlenecks along the route, including junctions near Shreyas signal and Sarvodaya Hospital, thereby significantly improving traffic flow.
Flyover's Strategic Design
The design of the flyover is being meticulously planned to accommodate the existing infrastructure. The project will consider the ongoing infrastructure works in the area, including the bridge being constructed by the Mumbai Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) connecting Ghatkopar East and West, and the Metro line near Sarvodaya Hospital. The official stated that these aspects are being carefully considered during the planning phase. To navigate these complex road and rail infrastructures, the flyover may need to be built at a second-level height. The Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) is expected to aid in the technical planning, including determining the appropriate height and construction methodology.
Easing Commute, Traffic
The primary objective of the flyover is to ease the daily commute by tackling congestion points along LBS Marg. The flyover is designed to circumvent bottlenecks at several small and major junctions, providing a smoother travel experience. Key areas of concern include the Shreyas junction, Sarvodaya Hospital junction, and the area near the BMC yard on Sant Narsi Mehta Road. The corridor faces constant traffic snarls due to the presence of three significant junctions such as the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, Ghatkopar Station Road, and the Sant Narsi Mehta Road junction. Additionally, numerous crossroads along LBS Marg contribute to daily traffic congestion, which the new flyover aims to address.
