Delhi to Devprayag
The expedition commenced from Delhi before dawn, with the updated Toyota Fortuner Legender, now featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system and enhanced technology,
ready for the mountain roads. The diesel engine's initial robust rumble quickly smoothed out as the automatic gearbox efficiently managed shifts, providing a progressive drive. Despite an updated touchscreen interface with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connectivity issues necessitated relying on phone navigation and Bluetooth for audio. As the sun rose, painting the hills with light, the journey progressed towards Devprayag, a significant spiritual site in Uttarakhand. This confluence marks the point where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge to form the sacred Ganga. Witnessing the distinct, merging water streams offered a powerful and fitting start to the Himalayan exploration.
Devprayag to Rudraprayag
Leaving Devprayag, the route began to ascend gently alongside the river, offering expansive vistas. An early morning departure proved advantageous, particularly when traversing Srinagar, Uttarakhand, where ongoing construction often causes delays. However, at this hour, the roads were remarkably clear and tranquil. The Fortuner felt supremely at ease on these pathways; its substantial size was managed with considerable comfort. The mild-hybrid system provided a subtle enhancement to power delivery, contributing to a noticeably more refined driving sensation. Conveniently placed cupholders positioned in front of the AC vents were a thoughtful touch, ensuring beverages remained refreshingly cool. The journey continued past Rudraprayag, another crucial confluence town where the Alaknanda river meets the Mandakini. Beyond this point, the roads became more constrained, and the towering mountains seemed to loom ever closer, enhancing the sense of immersion in the Himalayan landscape.
Arrival in Sari
By midday, the first day's destination, the village of Sari, was reached. Nestled amidst the hills, Sari offered a serene retreat, enveloped by dense forests and captivating mountain panoramas. After extended periods spent behind the wheel, the simple pleasure of basking in the afternoon sun provided a deeply rewarding respite. The crisp mountain air, combined with the gentle warmth of the sunlight and the profound silence of the highlands, acted as a revitalizing tonic. The imposing silhouette of the Fortuner, parked nearby, seemed to blend seamlessly with the rugged, natural environment, appearing perfectly suited to its surroundings.
Sari to Chopta Trek
The subsequent morning's drive from Sari to Chopta presented a visually stunning route, winding through thick forests within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Occasional clearings offered breathtaking, sweeping views of the Himalayas. Chopta serves as the gateway to the trek up to Tungnath, recognized as the highest Shiva temple globally. Upon parking the Fortuner, the ascent towards the temple commenced. As the altitude increased, sporadic patches of snow began to dot the path, eventually transforming sections of the landscape into a pristine white expanse. The biting mountain wind served as a constant reminder of the true Himalayan setting. Reaching Tungnath, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, felt like the ultimate culmination of the arduous climb. From this vantage point, numerous iconic Himalayan summits, including Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Bandarpunch, were visible.
Garhwal's Winding Roads
The ensuing day saw the journey progress towards Tilwara, a quaint settlement within the Garhwal region. Navigating these remote areas is an adventure in itself, characterized by narrow, single-lane roads, sharp turns, and steep inclines. This demanding terrain requires both proficient driving skills and a capable vehicle. The Fortuner demonstrated its mettle effectively here. Its potent diesel engine, delivering 204 Hp and 500 Nm of peak torque, confidently tackled severe gradients. The suspension system adeptly absorbed imperfections in the road surface, providing a smooth ride. Even on the most serpentine routes, the SUV maintained a stable and reassuring presence. During this leg of the journey, local vocabulary added cultural depth: 'Dhar' signifies the crest of a mountain ridge, while 'Gadera' refers to a mountain stream or small river, enriching the understanding of the regional geography.
Comfort on Extended Journeys
The true measure of a vehicle's practicality often emerges during extended road trips, and the Fortuner Legender excelled in several aspects. Its generously sized boot easily accommodated all luggage, making it an ideal companion for multi-day excursions. The spacious interior ensured ample room for passengers to relax and stretch, while the ride quality remained exceptionally smooth, even over rough and uneven surfaces. Thoughtful amenities for long drives were also present: numerous USB charging ports kept electronic devices powered, rear sunblinds offered protection from intense sunlight, and dual-zone climate control maintained optimal comfort for all occupants. These seemingly minor conveniences significantly enhance the overall experience of spending prolonged hours on the road.
Confronting the Snow
During the final stretch near Chopta, the road conditions underwent a dramatic transformation. Patches of snow began appearing along the roadside, eventually encroaching upon and covering sections of the route itself. Navigating snowy terrain, especially on downhill gradients with sharp curves, presents considerable challenges. Fortunately, the Fortuner's robust 4x4 drivetrain proved invaluable. Engaging the low-range four-wheel drive (4L) enabled the SUV to descend icy slopes with a slow, controlled, and confident pace. The descent was surprisingly stress-free, with the vehicle maintaining a steady momentum without the need for aggressive braking. Instances like these underscore the enduring importance of a truly capable 4x4 system.
Return to Devprayag
As the return journey towards Delhi commenced, a consistent thought lingered: while not the most agile SUV on winding roads, the Fortuner's inherent capability empowers unhesitating exploration. The invitation to take an unpaved trail or follow an unexpected detour is always present. This profound sense of confidence is central to the Fortuner experience. Near Devprayag, a narrow track leading towards the renowned confluence caught our attention. Intrigued, we followed it cautiously, and soon the SUV was positioned directly beside the sacred point where the Ganga originates. Capturing a photograph of the Fortuner against the backdrop of the Devprayag Sangam served as a perfect concluding image for this remarkable journey.
Rishikesh Stopover
Before embarking on the final highway stretch back to Delhi, a brief detour was made to Rishikesh. Lakshman Jhula, with its charming cafes offering views of the Ganga, provided a pleasant pause. Sitting by the river, enjoying a warm snack and a cup of tea after days spent amidst the mountains, felt exceptionally satisfying. The Fortuner, parked nearby, had reliably transported us across winding roads, snowy landscapes, and steep ascents without any issues. Back on the open highway, engaging the cruise control allowed the Fortuner to settle into a relaxed rhythm, making the long drive back surprisingly comfortable and less fatiguing. While the steering might feel weighty by contemporary SUV standards, it contributes to a charming sense of commanding a substantial, capable machine, rather than just operating a vehicle.
