For a precise measurement, it's crucial to begin with a full tank of fuel. Fill your car's gas tank completely, ensuring the nozzle clicks off automatically. Record the odometer reading at this point. Then, drive your car normally until the fuel level is significantly depleted – aiming for at least half a tank is recommended to minimize error. Once you've driven a substantial distance, return to the same gas station and refill the tank completely again, using the same pump if possible, and note the odometer reading. The difference between the two odometer readings gives you the total distance driven. Next, note the exact amount of fuel you added to refill the tank; this is the fuel consumed for that distance. Finally, divide the total distance traveled by the gallons (or liters) of fuel consumed. For instance, if you drove 300 miles and consumed 10 gallons, your mileage is 30 miles per gallon (MPG). Consistently using this full-tank-to-full-tank method over several fill-ups will provide a more reliable average mileage figure than relying on the car's onboard computer, which can sometimes be imprecise.
