Award Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the prestigious 2026 World Car of the Year awards, vehicles had to meet stringent eligibility criteria designed to ensure global relevance and production viability. A key requirement was that eligible cars must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units annually, guaranteeing a degree of market availability. Additionally, their pricing in their primary markets had to fall below the established luxury car threshold, making them accessible to a broader range of consumers. The vehicles also needed to be available for sale in at least two major global car markets, spanning at least two separate continents. This requirement encompassed regions such as China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, and the United States, with sales occurring between January 1, 2025, and March 30, 2026. These criteria ensure that the awarded vehicles are not niche products but represent significant developments in the mainstream automotive landscape.
