Unfortunate Airport Collision
On a recent Tuesday at Subhash Chandra Bose Airport in Kolkata, an unfortunate incident occurred involving a parked aircraft and a catering vehicle. The
event transpired at Bay No. 51, where a catering truck, while being maneuvered to begin its service, unexpectedly lurched forward. This unintended movement led to a collision with the engine of a stationary IndiGo aircraft. Fortunately, the impact was not severe, resulting in only minor damage to the aircraft. Authorities were promptly informed of the mishap, and investigations were initiated to understand the precise cause of the vehicle's unexpected acceleration. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of airport operations and preventing future occurrences.
Aircraft Grounded for Checks
Following the collision, the affected IndiGo aircraft was immediately taken out of service and grounded for comprehensive inspections. This precautionary measure is standard procedure to meticulously assess any potential damage and ensure the aircraft's airworthiness before it can resume operations. Maintenance teams are conducting thorough checks to address the minor damage sustained by the engine and to confirm that all safety systems are functioning optimally. IndiGo has stated its commitment to closely cooperating with all relevant authorities in their ongoing investigation into the incident. In the interim, a flight, specifically 6E 6663 bound for Guwahati from Kolkata, has been rescheduled and reassigned to a different aircraft to minimize disruption to passengers.
Recap of Similar Incidents
This recent event at Kolkata Airport is not the first of its kind in India, highlighting a recurring concern regarding ground operations and aircraft safety. In February of the same year, the wingtips of an IndiGo flight and an Air India flight made contact while taxiing at Mumbai Airport. Although this incident also occurred during ground operations, thankfully, all passengers aboard were unharmed. Another notable event took place in August of the previous year, also in Mumbai, where the tail of an IndiGo Airbus A321 struck the runway. This occurred during a low-altitude go-around maneuver necessitated by adverse weather conditions. While these incidents underscore the challenges in managing complex airport environments, it is important to note that in this specific Kolkata case, there were no reported injuries or any major catastrophic mishap, underscoring the effectiveness of safety protocols.
