Extended Dimensions Unveiled
Tesla has officially launched a new long wheelbase variant of its popular Model Y in India, starting at Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This significant update
centers around an extended wheelbase, measuring 3,040mm, which is a substantial 150mm longer than the standard version. This increase in wheelbase contributes to an overall vehicle length of 4,969mm, an increment of 179mm. While the width remains consistent at 1,982mm, the height has been raised by 44mm to 1668mm. Interestingly, this new iteration also features a slightly elevated ground clearance of 169mm, a 2mm improvement over its predecessor. The wheel size stays at 19 inches, though the L version sports a distinct design. Visually, differentiating the L from the regular model can be subtle, but upon closer inspection in profile, longer rear doors and a revised roofline with a larger rear quarter glass are noticeable. These design tweaks, according to Tesla, also contribute to better aerodynamic efficiency. At the rear, a more prominent boot lid spoiler further distinguishes this extended model. The signature full-width LED lighting at both the front and rear remains a consistent design element across both versions.
Performance and Range Boost
The long wheelbase Model Y variant introduces a more powerful and capable driving experience, highlighted by its dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration. This setup is estimated to be powered by an 85kWh battery, delivering approximately 456hp and 590Nm of torque, positioning it as the most potent Model Y available in India. This power translates to an impressive 0-100kph acceleration time of just 5.0 seconds. Furthermore, this variant achieves a remarkable WLTP-claimed range of 681km, making it the longest-range Model Y currently offered. For context, the standard rear-wheel drive models offer ranges of 500km and 661km in their respective configurations. Tesla also claims that the Model Y L can gain up to 288 km of range in a mere 15 minutes of charging at a Supercharger station. Enhancements extend to the vehicle's dynamics with an updated suspension system featuring adaptive dampers and electronic damping shocks for a more refined ride.
Innovative Interior Design
Inside, the long wheelbase Model Y primarily retains the minimalist aesthetic familiar to Tesla enthusiasts, centered around a large 16.0-inch central touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions. This screen size is an upgrade from the previous 15.4-inch unit found in earlier versions. A distinct advantage of the Model Y L is its new three-row seating configuration, adopting a 2+2+2 layout to accommodate six passengers comfortably. This variant offers several interior upgrades compared to the five-seater models. Rear-seat passengers benefit from an improved sound system that includes a subwoofer, and the front seats are equipped with a thigh extension for added comfort. The second-row captain seats feature electronically operated armrests, one-touch folding capabilities, and ventilation and heating functions. Passengers in the third row can enjoy powered recline and one-touch folding seats, along with dedicated AC vents. The interior can be specified in an all-black theme as standard or a dual-tone black and grey scheme for an additional cost. Carryover features include powered, heated, and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, panoramic glass roof, connected services, heated steering wheel and windshield, and a dashcam.
Advanced Safety and Warranty
The Model Y L comes equipped with an enhanced safety suite, including 9 airbags, which is two more than the standard version. Advanced driver-assistance systems are also standard, featuring automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning, and lane departure avoidance. Tesla's 'Full Self-Driving' feature remains an optional upgrade, priced at Rs 6 lakh, although its full functionality is contingent on regulatory approvals within the region. Tesla is backing the vehicle with a comprehensive warranty package: 4 years or 80,000km for the entire vehicle, and an extended 8-year or 1,92,000km warranty for the battery and drive unit, whichever comes first. In the competitive premium electric vehicle market, this new variant contends with established players like the BYD Sealion 7, BMW iX1 LWB, Kia EV6, Volvo EC40, and the Mini Countryman Electric.
