Class-Wise Luggage Limits
Indian Railways has set specific luggage allowances for each class. Second/General Class passengers get 35 kg plus a 10 kg relaxation. Third AC/AC Chair
Car passengers can carry 40 kg plus 10 kg. Sleeper Class allows 40 kg with a 10 kg buffer. Second AC passengers can take 50 kg with a 10 kg leeway, while AC First Class permits 70 kg plus a 15 kg grace. Remember, the weights mentioned are excluding the 'relaxation' weight.
Extra Luggage Booking
Need to carry more? No worries! Passengers can book additional luggage in the parcel van. For Second/General Class, you can book up to 60 kg extra. Third AC/AC Chair Car allows an extra 30 kg. Sleeper Class permits booking up to 70 kg. Second AC passengers can book an extra 30 kg, and AC First Class passengers can book an additional 65 kg. Always book in advance, especially during the festive rush!
Size and Measurement Rules
Beyond weight, size matters! Personal luggage, including trunks and suitcases, should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. For AC 3-tier and AC Chair Car passengers, the limit is 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. Larger items must go through the brake van, with a minimum charge of Rs 30. These measurements are important to keep in mind while packing your bags for your travel.
Penalties for Overweight
Going over the limit? Be prepared for fines! Passengers carrying unbooked luggage exceeding the allowed weight will face a penalty six times the booking amount. For example, a passenger traveling 500 km with 40 kg extra luggage would pay Rs 109 if booked but Rs 654 as a penalty if not booked. So, it's best to book in advance. Make sure to weigh your luggage.
