A Rugged Vision
Bentley has recently presented a fascinating concept vehicle, the Bentayga X Concept, at the FAT Ice Race event held in Zell am See, Austria. This distinct
creation is a unique exploration, built upon the foundation of the existing Bentayga Speed model. Its primary purpose is not to be a production-ready vehicle, but rather to serve as a means for Bentley to assess public reaction and gather valuable feedback regarding the potential for a more rugged, off-road-focused variant of their premier luxury SUV. The company views this concept as a catalyst for discussion and a way to understand consumer appetite for an enhanced off-road experience within the Bentayga lineage. This initiative aligns perfectly with the commencement of a significant, multi-year partnership between Bentley and FAT International, underscoring a collaborative spirit in exploring new automotive frontiers.
Enhanced Powertrain & Dynamics
Underpinning the Bentayga X Concept is the same formidable 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine found in the Bentayga Speed, delivering an impressive 650 horsepower. This powerhouse is meticulously paired with a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission and a permanent all-wheel-drive system, ensuring robust performance across diverse conditions. Crucially, the concept retains Bentley's sophisticated air suspension system and the innovative Bentley Dynamic Ride technology. This advanced 48-volt active anti-roll control system plays a vital role in maintaining a delicate equilibrium between luxurious on-road comfort and the increased demands of off-road excursions, allowing for superior handling and a smoother ride regardless of the terrain encountered.
Off-Road Hardware Upgrades
The transformation of the Bentayga X Concept into a more trail-ready machine involves several key modifications aimed at improving its ability to navigate challenging landscapes. The vehicle's ride height has been elevated by a substantial 55 mm, boosting its ground clearance to just under 310 mm, which is essential for clearing obstacles. Complementing this increased height, the track width has been expanded by 120 mm, significantly enhancing stability, particularly on uneven surfaces. To accommodate this wider stance, the wheel arches have been extended outwards by 40 mm. These enhancements aren't just for dry land; the concept also boasts an impressive wading depth of over 550 mm, meaning it can confidently traverse water obstacles that would typically deter a standard luxury SUV.
Wheels, Tyres & Exterior
The Bentayga X Concept stands out with its bespoke forged one-piece 22-inch wheels from Brixton, which are enveloped by substantial, large-aspect, high-profile off-road tyres. These tyres are specifically designed to provide superior grip and traction on loose, slippery, or uneven surfaces, a critical advantage for off-road driving. Visually, the concept distinguishes itself from the standard Bentayga through the incorporation of blacked-out lower body elements. These include the bumpers, wheel arches, side skirts, and rear splitter, creating a more aggressive and utilitarian aesthetic that sets it apart. For added practicality, a robust roof-mounted carrier has been fitted, equipped with four auxiliary spotlights. This not only enhances the vehicle's utility for extended off-road journeys and nighttime driving but also demonstrates its increased cargo-carrying capacity. In the show car, this rack notably carries an electric Bambino-size go-kart, emphasizing the partnership with FAT Karting and showcasing its load-bearing potential. The overall height of the vehicle, including the roof gear, reaches 2.49 metres. Furthermore, a distinctive titanium sports exhaust system from Akrapovic remains a prominent feature at the rear, and for added recovery capability, twin towing eyes have been integrated into the front bumper.
Event Presence and Showcase
The Bentayga X Concept's debut at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See was part of a broader display by Bentley at the event. The brand used this platform to showcase not only the rugged concept but also other significant models. Among these were a standard Bentayga Speed, highlighting the marque's existing capabilities, and the newly introduced Continental GTC S, offering a glimpse into their latest performance-oriented offerings. The Continental GT S was further demonstrated through dynamic runs, showcasing its athletic prowess. The event also featured the Speed Six Continuation Series Car Zero, underscoring Bentley's commitment to heritage and craftsmanship. This multifaceted presence at the FAT Ice Race allowed Bentley to engage with a wide audience, from enthusiasts of extreme off-roading to those appreciating the pinnacle of luxury and performance in their automotive lineup.
