Robust Design & Dimensions
A new contender in the SUV segment has officially debuted in Japan, poised for an anticipated arrival in the Indian market. This body-on-frame vehicle
presents a striking, boxy aesthetic softened by smooth contours, projecting an image of ruggedness. Its external dimensions measure 4,610 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,890 mm in height. These figures place it in a comparable size category to the Mahindra Scorpio-N, a familiar sight in India. However, beneath its robust exterior, the internal cabin space might feel slightly more constrained, attributed to a wheelbase measuring 2,580 mm, which is comparatively shorter. This deliberate design choice emphasizes its off-road prowess and utilitarian character rather than maximizing interior volume, suggesting it prioritizes a commanding road presence and trail capability.
Engine and Drivetrain
Currently, the Japanese version is equipped with a 2.7-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, identified as the 2TR-FE. This power unit is calibrated to produce approximately 164 horsepower and generate a torque of 245 Nm. The engine's output is managed through a 6-speed automatic transmission, which then distributes power to the wheels via a part-time four-wheel-drive system. This setup is designed to offer versatility for various driving conditions. While this powertrain configuration is confirmed for the Japanese market, there are ongoing enthusiast discussions and speculations regarding a potential future upgrade. Rumors suggest that by 2029, an enhanced version of the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine might be introduced. However, it is crucial to note that Toyota has not officially confirmed these diesel engine upgrade plans at this time, leaving the current gasoline engine as the confirmed offering for now.
Exterior Features Unveiled
The exterior of this new SUV is replete with functional and aesthetic elements catering to both style and utility. Prominently featured are LED headlamps that provide clear illumination, complemented by LED fog lamps at both the front and rear, enhancing visibility in adverse weather. It rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels, fitted with 265/60 R18 tires, offering a robust stance. The tail lamps also incorporate LED technology, contributing to its modern look and improved signaling. A distinctive feature is the side-hinged tailgate, a design choice often favored for its practicality in accessing the cargo area. Mounted centrally on this tailgate is a spare wheel, a classic off-road component that signifies preparedness for challenging journeys. Notably absent from the specification is a sunroof, a feature that might be overlooked by its intended audience, who are likely prioritizing its inherent off-road capabilities and rugged build.
Interior Comforts & Safety
Stepping inside, the cabin offers a blend of modern technology and convenience. The driver is presented with a semi-digital instrument cluster, which includes a 7-inch display for crucial driving information. Central to the dashboard is a sizable 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, serving as the hub for entertainment and vehicle settings. For passenger comfort, a dual-zone automatic climate control system ensures that different temperature preferences can be accommodated simultaneously. The vehicle is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including seven airbags strategically placed throughout the cabin. Advanced driver aids such as a Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert are integrated to enhance safety. Furthermore, a Pre-Collision System is present to help prevent potential accidents, and a 360-degree camera system provides an all-around view, significantly aiding in parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.
