Online Bookings Soar
The Indian Railways has witnessed a monumental shift in how passengers book their reserved tickets, with a staggering 88% of all such bookings made digitally
during the fiscal year 2025-26, up to February. This translates to an impressive volume of over 48.25 crore tickets purchased online. This significant trend underscores the growing preference for digital platforms, driven by the convenience and efficiency they offer. The Union Minister highlighted this transformation, noting how the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) platform has become the primary channel for securing train travel. This widespread adoption signifies a move away from traditional methods, such as visiting physical reservation counters, thereby saving passengers valuable time and reducing travel expenses. The online system is now recognized as a cornerstone of passenger-centric initiatives by Indian Railways, demonstrating its successful integration into the daily lives of commuters.
Passenger-Friendly Initiative
The widespread embrace of online train ticket booking through IRCTC has been lauded as one of the most beneficial advancements introduced by Indian Railways, significantly enhancing passenger convenience. This digital facility has streamlined the entire ticketing process, liberating passengers from the need to physically visit railway stations for reservations. The ease of booking from virtually anywhere, coupled with reduced travel time and costs associated with these visits, has cemented its popularity. The minister's statement emphasizes that the overwhelming acceptance of this system, evidenced by the 88% online booking rate for reserved tickets, speaks volumes about its passenger-friendly nature. It represents a successful implementation of technology to directly address passenger needs and improve their overall travel experience, making train journeys more accessible and less cumbersome.
Ensuring Fair Access
In response to the burgeoning online booking landscape, the government has proactively implemented robust measures to counteract fraudulent activities and ensure equitable access to train tickets for genuine passengers. A significant step taken is the mandate, effective from July 1, 2025, requiring Aadhaar authentication for booking Tatkal tickets online. This strategic move aims to curtail the misuse of the system by limiting the creation and utilization of numerous fake accounts, thereby leveling the playing field for legitimate travelers. The effectiveness of these measures is evident in the proactive management of user accounts. During 2025, approximately 3.04 crore user accounts were deactivated, and an additional 2.94 crore were placed under temporary suspension, with provisions for revalidation. Furthermore, between January 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026, a notable 1,80,474 user accounts were successfully re-activated, indicating a dynamic approach to account management and security.
Strengthening Tech Defenses
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has significantly bolstered its technological infrastructure to combat evolving cyber threats and ensure a seamless booking experience. Recognizing the prevalence of malicious online activities, IRCTC has deployed advanced anti-bot technology capable of intercepting and blocking approximately 64% of harmful traffic. This sophisticated defense mechanism is crucial in protecting the integrity of the booking system and preventing disruptions for genuine users attempting to secure their travel arrangements. Beyond mitigating automated attacks, IRCTC has also actively worked to block suspicious communication channels. In the period between 2025-26, up to February 28, 2026, a substantial 13,023 suspicious email domains were successfully blocked, further safeguarding the platform against potential security breaches and enhancing the overall reliability of the online ticketing service for millions of passengers.
