Expired Goods Uncovered
In a significant crackdown on food safety violations, Rajasthan's Food Safety Department took decisive action against a distribution company in Jaipur.
The operation targeted M/s Athlete Distributor in the Kho Nagorian area following a citizen's complaint lodged via the state government's 181 helpline. This anonymous tip alerted authorities to suspicious activities within the company's premises. A swift response led to the seizure of an immense quantity of expired food products, reportedly amounting to approximately 1.5 lakh kilograms. The primary focus of the investigation was on Amul-branded items that had passed their original sell-by dates, suggesting a deliberate attempt to circumvent regulations and profit from goods that should have been disposed of.
The Tampering Operation
During the raid, a specialized team led by the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Jaipur-II meticulously inspected the distributor's warehouse. They uncovered around 12,000 cartons filled with a variety of expired products, including popular items like noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and energy drinks. The scale of the operation became increasingly apparent as investigators discovered the tools and materials used for the fraudulent activity. They found bottles of thinner, acetone, and various other chemicals, which were allegedly employed to strip away the original printed expiry dates from approximately 3,000 cartons. Further compounding the illicit scheme, officials discovered 4,500 newly branded Amul cartons, indicating a clear intention to repackage the stale stock for resale and deceive consumers. The firm's operator, Gagan Ahuja, reportedly confessed to learning these deceptive techniques from online video tutorials, specifically YouTube.
Destruction and Investigation
Following the discovery of the tampered goods, authorities initiated a large-scale destruction process that spanned four days. A total of 27 trucks were mobilized to transport the nearly 1.5 lakh kilograms of compromised products to a designated dumping yard. The entire expense of this disposal was borne by the distributor, underscoring the severity of their violation. While the immediate threat of these expired products reaching consumers has been mitigated through destruction, the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are actively working to ascertain whether any of the altered products had already made their way into the market and, if so, the extent of their distribution. Amul, the brand whose products were involved, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. The case highlights the critical importance of robust food safety surveillance and consumer vigilance.
