Collision at Bay 51
A routine day at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when a catering vehicle, reportedly
a third-party unmanned unit operating on the apron, experienced an unforeseen lurch forward upon startup. This sudden movement resulted in a collision with a stationary IndiGo aircraft. The impact, which occurred at Bay No. 51, specifically affected the aircraft's engine, though initial reports indicate that the damage sustained was minor. Following the incident, relevant aviation authorities were promptly informed to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mishap.
Aircraft Grounded for Checks
In the aftermath of the collision, the affected IndiGo aircraft was immediately grounded. This precautionary measure is standard procedure to ensure the safety and airworthiness of the plane before it can resume passenger service. The airline has stated that the aircraft is undergoing thorough inspections and will undergo all necessary maintenance to certify it fit for operations. To mitigate disruption, flight 6E 6663, scheduled to fly from Kolkata to Guwahati, has been reassigned to an alternate aircraft. IndiGo is cooperating fully with the investigative authorities to ascertain the cause of the incident.
Context of Air Incidents
While this specific incident at Kolkata airport involved no reported injuries or major damage, it adds to a recent pattern of aviation-related occurrences. Previously, in February, wingtips of an IndiGo flight and an Air India aircraft briefly touched while taxiing at Mumbai airport, fortunately with no harm to passengers. Last August, an IndiGo Airbus A321 experienced its tail striking the runway during a low-altitude go-around maneuver in Mumbai, an event attributed to adverse weather conditions. These events, while distinct in their specifics, highlight the complexities and potential risks inherent in airport operations.
