alters the traditional car-buying experience by decoupling the cost of the battery from the vehicle itself. Instead of purchasing the battery outright, buyers can opt for a rental or subscription plan. This strategy is primarily aimed at lowering the substantial initial investment required for an electric car, thereby democratizing EV ownership. By offering a separate battery lease, manufacturers can present their electric models at a more attractive entry-level price point, potentially accelerating the adoption of electric mobility across a broader segment of the Indian consumer base. The BaaS concept addresses a key barrier: the high cost associated with battery technology, which often represents a significant portion of an EV's total price. Compact City Commuter
The smallest and most budget-friendly EV featuring a BaaS option is the MG Comet EV, with prices starting at an enticing Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom) under this plan, a considerable drop from its standard Rs 7.73 lakh starting price. This compact four-seater is designed for urban navigation, boasting dimensions perfect for bustling city streets. Buyers can select from four distinct variants, with higher trims supporting faster 7.2 kW AC charging, though all models come standard with a 3.3 kW charger. Across all variants, the Comet EV is equipped with a 17.3 kWh battery pack, delivering a practical real-world range of approximately 200 km on a full charge. The battery rental for this model begins at an economical Rs 3.2 per kilometer, further enhancing its affordability for daily commutes.
New-Age Electric Hatchback
Representing a fresh addition to the BaaS offerings is the Tata Punch EV, which made its debut with this battery subscription model during its recent facelift. This model starts at an attractive Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom) under the BaaS scheme, compared to its standard starting price of Rs 9.69 lakh. The updated Punch EV is available in five trim levels and offers two new battery choices: a 30 kWh unit and a larger 40 kWh option. These configurations provide a claimed ARAI range of up to 468 km and a C75 real-world range of up to 355 km. Enhancing its appeal, the updated Punch EV now supports quicker DC fast charging, and its electric motor has been revamped to produce a peak output of 127 bhp. Interior updates include new upholstery colors, with the majority of features carried over from the previous iteration. The battery rental for the Tata Punch EV begins at a competitive Rs 2.6 per kilometer.
Spacious MPV-Style EV
The MG Windsor EV, now also known as the Windsor EV Pro, has established itself as a popular choice since its 2024 launch in India, offering a BaaS option starting at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), significantly less than its standard Rs 14.00 lakh starting price. Despite its distinctive styling, the Windsor EV impresses with a capacious and versatile cabin, featuring MPV-like proportions. A standout feature is its rear seat backrest, which can recline up to a comfortable 135 degrees. Customers can choose between two battery pack sizes: a 38 kWh unit and a larger 52.9 kWh battery, promising an impressive range of over 440 km with the bigger pack. The vehicle is equipped with a host of modern amenities, including a panoramic glass roof, a large central touchscreen with connected car technology, a 360-degree camera, and automatic climate control. Higher-end variants with the extended-range battery also incorporate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and a powered tailgate. Battery rental for the Windsor EV starts at Rs 3.9 per kilometer for the 38 kWh variants and Rs 4.5 per kilometer for the 52.9 kWh variants.
Maruti's Electric Debut
Maruti Suzuki has entered the Indian electric car market with the e Vitara, which is available under a BaaS model starting at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom), a notable reduction from its standard Rs 15.99 lakh starting price. This model aims to compete with other upcoming electric SUVs. The e Vitara is offered in three variants and two battery configurations: an entry-level 49 kWh battery pack and a larger 61 kWh option for the rest of the range. Maruti claims an impressive range of up to 543 km for this EV, with real-world figures expected to be around 420-440 km. Battery rental costs differ based on the battery size: prices for the base 49 kWh battery start at Rs 3.99 per kilometer, while the larger 61 kWh battery options start at Rs 4.39 per kilometer.
Feature-Rich Electric SUV
The MG ZS EV, a long-standing contender in the Indian market, now also presents a Battery-as-a-Service option, with prices beginning at Rs 13.00 lakh (ex-showroom), a significant decrease from its standard Rs 17.99 lakh starting price. This electric SUV is exclusively offered with a 50.3 kWh battery, providing a manufacturer-claimed range of up to 461 km. Despite its established presence, the ZS EV remains a feature-rich vehicle, capable of rivaling newer entrants. Its top variants are equipped with advanced technologies like ADAS, a digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable driver’s seat, automatic headlamps and wipers, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 360-degree camera. The ZS EV is available across four distinct variants. The battery rental for all variants is priced starting at Rs 4.5 per kilometer.
