Myanmar Seismic Event
On Tuesday evening, at approximately 9:04 PM Indian Standard Time, a notable seismic event occurred with its epicenter in Myanmar. The German Research
Centre for Geosciences reported this earthquake to have a magnitude of 5.8. This powerful tremor originated at a considerable depth of 55 kilometers below the Earth's surface, with its precise location pinpointed at 20.51° North latitude and 93.96° East longitude. Following this initial disturbance, a subsequent, though less intense, tremor was recorded at 9:21:29 PM IST the same day. This second event also originated from a significant depth, measuring 50 kilometers, as confirmed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed casualties associated with this seismic activity.
Kolkata Tremor Experience
The seismic waves generated by the Myanmar earthquake were strong enough to be felt distinctly by residents of Kolkata, leading to widespread discussion on social media platforms. Numerous individuals took to online forums to share their experiences, confirming the widespread nature of the tremors. One particularly vivid account described the entire restaurant shaking in the Park Street area, highlighting the intensity of the shaking. Another post posed a question to the city's inhabitants, asking if others had also experienced the earthquake, underscoring the shared yet surprising nature of the event. These social media interactions served as immediate confirmation that the impact of the Myanmar earthquake extended far beyond its epicenter, reaching into densely populated urban areas like Kolkata.
Related Seismic Activity
In addition to the primary earthquake originating in Myanmar, the same Tuesday also saw other seismic occurrences in the broader region. Specifically, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported a separate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 that struck Bangladesh. This event, distinct from the Myanmar quake, was recorded at 4:06:46 AM IST. The NCS further specified that this earthquake occurred at a significant depth of 150 kilometers. Its geographical coordinates were noted as 22.84° North latitude and 89.01° East longitude. This secondary seismic event in Bangladesh, though of a lower magnitude and greater depth, indicates a period of increased geological activity in the subcontinent and surrounding areas.
