New Route Approved
Indian Railways has given the go-ahead for a Vande Bharat Sleeper train to operate between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)
in Mumbai. This significant development marks the second route for the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant, following its initial introduction between Kolkata and Guwahati. The approval was officially communicated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to Lok Sabha MP PC Mohan. This move is a direct response to the growing demand for efficient and comfortable long-distance travel, aiming to enhance connectivity and passenger convenience between these two vital economic hubs. The introduction of this new service is expected to redefine the overnight travel experience, blending the familiar comfort of sleeper-style travel with the modern technology and design synonymous with the Vande Bharat brand.
Accelerated Travel Times
Passengers can anticipate a substantial reduction in their travel time on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper. Currently, conventional trains take approximately 20 hours to traverse the distance between these two metropolises. However, the new Vande Bharat Sleeper is projected to complete the same journey in a significantly shorter span of about 15 hours. While the operational details, including the exact stoppage points and the official inauguration date, are still being finalized by the ministry, the core objective remains to provide the fastest possible overnight travel solution. This efficiency gain is a hallmark of the Vande Bharat initiative, aiming to make rail travel a more attractive and time-saving option for inter-city commuters.
Sleeper Train Success
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train has already demonstrated remarkable popularity and efficacy on its inaugural route. Since its launch in January, the service connecting Kolkata and Guwahati has seen an overwhelming response, with occupancy rates exceeding 100 percent. In its initial three months of operation, this service catered to 1.21 lakh passengers across 119 trips, highlighting a strong passenger demand for premium overnight rail travel. The success is further underscored by the fact that tickets for the first commercial run were booked within hours of reservation opening. This consistent high patronage indicates a significant public trust and growing preference for the Vande Bharat experience, paving the way for its expansion to other key corridors like Bengaluru-Mumbai.
Evolution of Vande Bharat
The Vande Bharat Sleeper represents the third distinct iteration within the Vande Bharat train series, following the Vande Bharat Chair Car and the Vande Metro. Each variant is strategically designed to cater to specific travel distances and passenger needs. The Vande Bharat Chair Car, introduced in February 2019, is suited for journeys between 500 to 800 km. The Vande Metro, officially named Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and launched in September 2024, is optimized for shorter inter-city routes spanning 100 to 300 km. The Sleeper version, conceptualized for longer distances typically ranging from 1,000 to 1,300 km, offers enhanced comfort for overnight travel, effectively merging the benefits of a Rajdhani-style sleeper with advanced Vande Bharat technology.
Growing Passenger Trust
The broader Vande Bharat Express network is experiencing a significant surge in passenger patronage, reflecting a nationwide shift towards modern, comfortable, and swift rail travel. During the fiscal year 2025-26, approximately 3.98 crore passengers utilized Vande Bharat trains, marking a substantial year-on-year growth of nearly 34 percent compared to the 2.97 crore passengers in FY 2024-25. Since its inception, the Vande Bharat Express has served over 9.1 crore passengers across more than 1 lakh trips. This consistent and robust growth is a testament to the widespread public trust and sustained demand for these advanced trains, indicating their success in revolutionizing long-distance rail journeys across India.
