Exterior Design Evolution
The Tata Punch EV facelift greets the road with a noticeably modernized exterior, signaling its electric identity more clearly than before. The front end
has been streamlined, shedding a previously connecting black strip for a cleaner look, and omitting the LED light bar to manage costs. A prominent front charging flap remains a key visual element, complemented by a neatly integrated air intake with vertical slats lower down. New greyed-out body cladding adds a rugged touch, though its matte finish might appear somewhat subdued. The vehicle's familiar tall stance and high beltline persist from the side, with the rear door handles strategically placed on the C-pillar. It now sports 16-inch alloy wheels with a matte grey finish and subtle teal branding accents. The rear has also seen a refresh, featuring connected LED taillamps and a more robust bumper design. Fresh color options, like the vibrant Fearless Yellow, inject a renewed sense of style into the overall aesthetic.
Platform and Powertrain Enhancements
Underneath its refreshed skin, the Punch EV facelift is built upon Tata's advanced acti.ev platform, a significant architectural shift. This new foundation allows for two distinct battery configurations: a 30kWh unit and a larger 40kWh option. The transition from cylindrical to prismatic battery cells is key, enabling more efficient packaging and thus, greater energy storage within the same physical space. Charging capabilities have seen a substantial upgrade, with support for rapid 65kW fast charging. Tata claims an impressive 10-80% charge can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes, with the potential to add as much as 135km of range in just 15 minutes – a highly practical feature for quick top-ups. A notable innovation is the new 6-in-1 drive unit, which consolidates multiple components into a single, more compact, and efficient module. This advancement results in a lighter and smaller powertrain, freeing up space under the bonnet, though the utility of this extra space, perhaps for a larger frunk, is yet to be fully realized.
Interior Ambiance and Comfort
Stepping inside the Punch EV facelift reveals a cabin designed to feel more open and inviting, largely due to a lighter grey interior theme. The dashboard presents a clean, uncluttered layout, highlighted by a distinctive white trim piece that spans its width. Both the dashboard and seats adopt a dual-tone color scheme, lending a premium feel that belies the vehicle's segment. Entry and exit are facilitated by wide-opening doors, enhancing practicality. The front seats are designed for comfort and provide good support, while the elevated seating position offers an excellent view of the road ahead. For those opting for the top variant, the inclusion of ventilated seats is a significant comfort feature, especially in warmer climates. However, the absence of steering reach adjustment might be a minor drawback for some drivers. Certain controls, like the rotary gear selector, can feel a bit slow in their response, and the climate control panel, a combination of touch and physical buttons, isn't always the most intuitive to operate on the move. Nevertheless, storage solutions are practical, including a useful armrest, cup holders, and a wireless charging pad.
Rear Seat and Cargo Space
For its compact dimensions, the Punch EV facelift offers a respectable rear seating experience. Legroom and headroom are adequate, and the seat itself is comfortable, preventing an overly awkward posture for passengers. It's best suited for two occupants, though three can manage for shorter journeys, albeit with some squeezing. The omission of rear air conditioning vents is a surprising omission in a vehicle targeted at the Indian market. The boot space, however, is a strong point, offering a practical 366 liters, which is ample for carrying multiple pieces of luggage. The front trunk, or frunk, is quite small and primarily serves the purpose of storing charging cables rather than any significant cargo.
Feature Highlights and Safety
The Punch EV facelift continues to impress with its generous feature list. It comes equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system offering seamless wireless connectivity. The 360-degree camera system is a standout feature, providing exceptional clarity and utility for navigating tight spaces. A digital driver's display enhances the modern feel, complemented by an air purifier for improved cabin air quality, cruise control for relaxed highway driving, and a sunroof for an open-air feel. Some minor deletions, such as ambient lighting, have been made. Safety remains a top priority, with standard equipment including six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), hill-hold assist, and ISOFIX mounts for child seats. A new high-beam assist function is a welcome addition to the suite of safety features.
Driving Dynamics and Range
The driving experience in the Punch EV facelift is marked by a noticeable improvement in performance and refinement. The powertrain, depending on the battery, delivers either 88hp or a more potent 129hp, with a consistent 154Nm of torque. Acceleration feels smooth and progressive, avoiding any abrupt surges and making city driving exceptionally easy. The three driving modes – Eco, City, and Sport – offer distinct characteristics. Eco mode proves surprisingly capable for everyday use, City mode is ideal for daily commutes, and Sport mode injects a palpable sense of liveliness into the drive. While not overwhelmingly fast, it offers sufficient pep to be engaging, with Tata claiming a 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.1 seconds. Refinement is excellent, with the cabin remaining remarkably quiet, isolating occupants from the electric motor's operation. Road noise becomes more apparent only at higher speeds. The driving range has also seen a boost; the larger 40kWh battery is rated for up to 468km (MIDC), and real-world testing suggests a practical range of 325 to 350km on a full charge, which is more than adequate for most daily needs and even occasional longer trips. The regenerative braking system is finely tuned, offering four levels of intensity, with Level 3 providing the strongest resistance. Seamlessly switching between these levels using the paddles enhances driving smoothness in traffic and aids in range recuperation.
Ride, Handling, and Braking
Ride quality continues to be a strong suit for the Punch EV facelift, offering a mature and composed feel on the road. The suspension effectively soaks up imperfections, handling even rough patches with impressive composure. At higher speeds, the vehicle maintains stability and a planted feel. Handling is predictable and confidence-inspiring; while there's a degree of body roll, it never feels alarming, aided by the low center of gravity from the battery placement. The steering, though not the most communicative, is accurate and predictable. A notable change is the front disc and rear drum brake setup, replacing the previous four-wheel disc brakes. Despite this adjustment, the braking performance remains robust and reassuring, with the SUV demonstrating good stability during sudden or emergency stops.
Pricing and Value Proposition
A significant positive takeaway is that Tata has managed to introduce these substantial upgrades while simultaneously reducing prices across the range. The starting price for the Punch EV facelift is Rs 9.69 lakh, extending up to Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom). This represents a price decrease of Rs 30,000 for the base model and a notable Rs 1.85 lakh reduction for the top-tier variant compared to its predecessor. Further enhancing affordability is the option of a battery subscription plan, which can significantly lower the initial purchase cost. While some cost-saving measures have been implemented, they do not detract from the overall positive ownership experience. The Punch EV facelift presents a well-rounded package that is practical, user-friendly, feature-rich, and efficient, making it an almost perfect choice for city driving and a viable option for small families. For those requiring more rear-seat space, larger alternatives like the Nexon EV might be considered, but for a vast majority of buyers, the Punch EV hits a compelling sweet spot in the electric compact SUV segment.
