Swift Overnight Travel
A significant enhancement in rail travel is on the horizon for passengers journeying between Pune and Bengaluru. The new Vande Bharat Sleeper train is engineered
to drastically cut down the current lengthy travel durations. Instead of the existing 18 hours and 15 minutes on the Udyan Express or the nearly 19 hours and 20 minutes on the Coimbatore Express, this modern service will whisk travellers between the two cities in approximately 13 hours. This means passengers can embark in the evening, enjoy a restful night's sleep in comfortable, well-appointed berths, and arrive at their destination bright and early the following morning. This substantial time saving is expected to be a boon for a wide array of travellers, including busy IT professionals, students commuting for studies, business executives, and leisure tourists alike, offering a much-needed faster and more convenient alternative.
Route and Stations
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train, slated to be the second of its kind in India after the Howrah-Kamakhya route, will operate between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai and KSR Bengaluru. Its planned route will include a crucial stop in Pune, along with Solapur and Wadi, before reaching its southern terminus. To facilitate these high-speed journeys, essential railway corridors, specifically the Daund-Wadi and Wadi-Guntakal stretches, have undergone crucial upgrades to accommodate train speeds of up to 130 km per hour. While the primary route is set, railway authorities are also exploring alternative paths, potentially passing through Kalaburagi or Hubballi, to optimize connectivity. Importantly, this new Vande Bharat Sleeper service will not displace existing train services; trains like the Udyan Express will continue to run concurrently, providing passengers with more choices for their travel needs.
Operational Details & Launch
While a definitive launch date is yet to be officially declared, indications from government sources point towards operations commencing by December 2026. The train is scheduled to operate six days a week, with one day dedicated to essential maintenance to ensure consistent performance and safety. To guarantee seamless service in both directions, two train sets will be deployed. The departure from both CSMT Mumbai and KSR Bengaluru is anticipated to be around 9 pm, facilitating an early morning arrival. This development is part of a larger vision by Indian Railways, with a total of 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains expected to be functional across the nation by the end of 2026. Preparatory work is actively being finalized by the South Western Railway to ensure a smooth rollout of this advanced service.
Fare Structure & Amenities
Although the final ticket prices are still under deliberation, initial estimates derived from the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service suggest a fare range of approximately Rs 2,500 for AC 3-tier, Rs 3,000-3,200 for AC 2-tier, and Rs 3,600-3,900 for First AC. A significant aspect of this new service is the fixed fare policy; there will be no dynamic pricing, and crucially, the cost of meals will be incorporated into the ticket price, offering passengers predictability and value. Furthermore, the train will implement a stringent reservation system, exclusively issuing fully confirmed tickets with no provision for RAC, waitlists, or partial confirmations. Passengers can anticipate a host of modern amenities designed for ultimate comfort, including specialized orthopaedic berths, individual reading lights, convenient charging points, gentle ambient night lighting, and advanced aircraft-style bio-vacuum toilets. For those opting for First AC, additional luxuries such as shower facilities and dedicated baby care areas will be available. Safety is paramount, with the train equipped with CCTV surveillance and the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system.
Coach Configuration & Booking
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is designed to accommodate a substantial number of passengers, featuring a total of 16 coaches and a capacity of 823 individuals. This configuration includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, collectively offering 611 berths, providing a comfortable and cost-effective option for many travellers. Complementing these are 4 AC 2-tier coaches, which can house 188 passengers, offering enhanced space and privacy. At the premium end, there is 1 First AC coach, which provides 24 exclusive berths for those seeking the highest level of comfort and service. Once the official train number and timetable are released, booking tickets will be a straightforward process, available through the IRCTC website and its mobile application. Adhering to Indian Railways' guidelines, reservations will open up to 120 days, approximately four months, in advance, allowing passengers ample time to plan their journeys and secure their preferred berths on this cutting-edge service.
