Why Your FASTag Fails
Many motorists face frustrating delays at toll plazas, not due to the toll system itself, but because of issues with their FASTag. The National Highways
Authority of India (NHAI) has identified worn-out or damaged FASTags as a primary reason for scanning errors, leading to long queues. Over time, constant exposure to sunlight can degrade the tag's internal components, hindering its ability to communicate effectively with the scanners at toll booths. This degradation, coupled with other factors, can significantly disrupt the flow of traffic and cause unnecessary stoppages for drivers, even when their linked accounts have ample funds.
Common Causes of Malfunction
NHAI has pinpointed three main culprits behind a malfunctioning FASTag. Firstly, frequent and vigorous windshield cleaning, especially with harsh cleaning agents, can inadvertently damage the delicate RFID chip embedded within the tag. Secondly, prolonged exposure to the elements – including intense heat, dust, and rain – can weaken the adhesive holding the tag in place and compromise its internal structure. Lastly, as with most electronic devices, FASTags degrade over time. An old or worn-out tag, particularly one that has been in use for several years, is more prone to failure, leading to inconsistent scanning performance and potential toll passage disruptions.
When to Consider Replacement
It's crucial for drivers to recognize the signs that their FASTag might need replacing. The NHAI suggests motorists should consider a replacement if their FASTag is over five years old. Furthermore, if you're consistently encountering scan failures or experiencing prolonged delays at toll plazas, it's a strong indicator that the tag's functionality is compromised. A faulty FASTag not only causes personal inconvenience and potential financial implications due to extended stops but also contributes to congestion on the highways. Proactive replacement ensures that your toll payments are processed smoothly and efficiently.
Getting Your Replacement
The solution to a problematic FASTag is straightforward: contact your issuer bank. The NHAI strongly recommends reaching out to the bank that originally issued your FASTag to request a replacement. This process is designed to be simple and efficient, ensuring that you can get back to smooth, uninterrupted travel as quickly as possible. Replacing a damaged or old FASTag is not just about convenience; it's about maintaining the integrity of the electronic toll collection system and contributing to reduced traffic congestion on national highways, especially as barrier-less tolling systems become more prevalent.
