New Delhi: WhatsApp is working on a massive privacy update that may transform the way users initiate new chats in the application. The messaging app is developing
a system that will enable users to chat with usernames and not their phone numbers; therefore, within the system, users will be able to remain anonymous when chatting with strangers, customers, and other online users.
It now implements the feature with an additional security feature known as a username key. In this new option there will be a step of verification that will take place prior to anyone sending a message to a user the first time. It provides account owners with additional ability to control who can gain access to them, despite their username being publicly visible.
How WhatsApp usernames will work
Using the new system of usernames, individuals will be able to search and send messages to the other individuals using a distinctive name rather than a phone number. This comes in handy when the user wants to communicate with the unknown contacts or businesses without revealing personal information.
Where a number is not stored in the address book of the phone, usernames will be displayed in the chats. End-to-end encryption will still be applied to messages, as is the case with normal WhatsApp conversations.
What is a username key?
The username key is a non-compulsory access code associated with the username of a user. It acts as a chat filter on new messages. Even the person who manages to find a username will not be able to create a conversation unless they put in the correct key.
This key is not a substitute for the username. Rather, it dictates the individuals who may send the initial message. Users are free to share their key with individuals that they trust.
How first-time chats will be protected
When an individual makes an attempt to message a username-based account in the first instance, WhatsApp will present a special screen where the username key is required. Unless the right key is typed, the chat will not open. Messages and calls will not be accepted as well.
This renders it apparent that the account owner has decided to restrict the people that can reach them.
Why this matters for privacy?
The new system allows individuals to retain their username without limiting direct messaging. It is helpful to creators, business people, and every person that shares their profile over the Internet. Keys can be obtained with real contacts, and spam and random messages are blocked.
It establishes a compromise between the discoverability and protection.
WhatsApp is yet to perfect the appearance and functionality of this feature. The company is enhancing the interface in a way that users know the reason for using the key and its usage.
The first-time chats may have the username key that is expected to be rolled out in a later update. It will also provide its users with greater privacy and control and a more secure means of initiating new conversations once operational.
