New Delhi: A book coauthored by cofounder and current CEO of Palantir Alex Karp, The Technological Republic, is currently facing massive criticism over
it providing a ‘manifesto’ for the weaponisation of artificial intelligence by the US and its allies.
Palantir, a leading defence and intelligence software firm, has faced similar criticism earlier as well. It has been called out for its involvement in expanding government surveillance through artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies. Critics have also pointed out Palantir’s contracts with the administration of current US President Donald Trump, where Palantir software has been used to enable deportations of undocumented immigrants and the aggregation of sensitive data on Americans.
What is the current controversy?
Palantir recently summarised the key arguments of book ‘The Technological Republic’, written by the company’s chief executive, Alexander Karp, and Nicholas W Zamiska, the head of its corporate affairs, in a post on X. The post which laid out the summary in a 22-point directive has since then proved to be extremely divisive, inciting severe controversy and discussions.
Many points from the X post which outlines some of the ideological positions in the book, have been criticised over their outlook of enforcing American exceptionalism and over-stressing the development of AI to be used in warfare, intelligence and surveillance.

The summary, outlining the ideology of the book, argues that leading US tech firms have a “moral debt” to the United States, which needs “hard power” fuelled by cutting-edge software to maintain global dominance. “If a US Marine asks for a better rifle, we should build it; and the same goes for software,” it explained. “The question is not whether AI weapons will be built; it is who will build them and for what purpose,” the company said, highlighting the importance that AI will have in the near future, which it claimed would be more than that of nuclear power.
“Our adversaries will not pause to indulge in theatrical debates about the merits of developing technologies with critical military and national security applications. They will proceed,” the statement called out as it outlined the global AI race of the coming future. Of the US role in it, the statement also said, “Some cultures have produced vital advances; others remain dysfunctional and regressive.” Statements which have not gone down well and have received severe pushback.
Detractors hit back
Mark Coeckelbergh, a Belgian philosopher of technology who teaches at the University of Vienna, described the message as an “example of technofascism”.
Greek economist and former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said Palantir had effectively signalled a willingness “to add to nuclear Armageddon the AI-driven threat to humanity’s existence”, saying that the company was, “kind enough to sum up its hideous ideology in 22 points.”
The release of the ‘manifesto’ also led to comments from several MPs in the UK, who questioned Britain’s portfolio of contracts with Palantir. Martin Wrigley, a Liberal Democrat MP who is a member of the commons science and technology select committee said, “Palantir’s manifesto, which embraces AI state surveillance of citizens along with national service in the USA, is either a parody of a RoboCop film, or a disturbing narcissistic rant from an arrogant organisation.”
