New Delhi: Amazon is facing growing criticism from some employees as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence while carrying
out large-scale workforce reductions. In the last eight months the tech giant has cut about 30,000 corporate roles as part of CEO Andy Jassy’s mission to streamline the company and cut down on management layers.
Meanwhile, Amazon is also scaling up its AI efforts with significant investments in data centres and computing power. Some workers have expressed concern about the escalating job losses and increased investments in AI, noting that the company is increasingly focused on AI at the cost of its workforce.
Amazon employees rise concerns over AI expansion
A Seattle City Council hearing brought the debate to light this week when a group of Amazon engineers testified in favour of proposals to better regulate the building of large AI data centres. During the hearing, Patrick Schloesser, a software engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS), correlated the company’s recent cutbacks with its “aggressive investments in AI infrastructure”.
Schloesser said that the company’s leaders have furloughed 30,000 corporate employees in the past eight months. “What that tells me is that Big Tech is desperate to build as much compute capacity as it can, as fast as it can.”
CNBC reports that Amazon responded by saying, “We value workers’ right to voice their opinions on matters of public discourse.”
Tech giants pour billions into artificial intelligence
Amazon isn’t the only company investing in AI. It’s a larger movement in the tech world, where leading companies are allocating more resources than ever before to develop AI infrastructure.
Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta may spend almost $700 billion combined on AI infrastructure this year, industry estimates suggest. Amazon is forecast to spend approximately $200 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, a share of which will be allocated to building out data centres and developing AI capabilities.
The expenditure signifies the escalating rivalry between technology giants for access to computing resources to power more sophisticated AI solutions.
Environmental concerns surround data centre growth
The surge in AI infrastructure is also drawing the gaze of local communities and policymakers. Massive amounts of energy and water are needed in large data centres, and this has led to concerns about the environmental footprint.
In several locations throughout the United States, residents have called for more regulation of new facilities, citing the need for careful consideration of the long-term impacts of new projects on local resources before they can proceed.
The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that at the moment, legislators in 14 states in the United States are floating proposals that could limit, delay, or impose other conditions on the expansion of data centres.
With rapid AI investments, the tension between technological progress, environmental considerations, and the effects on the workforce seems set to grow stronger in the coming months.
