New Delhi: An Israeli strike on the Islamic University in Gaza City killed three people and injured eight others on Sunday, October 25, according to hospital
staff and university sources.
Al Shifa Hospital said it received the bodies of three people and treated eight others wounded in the drone strike. Two sources at the university said those killed were administrative staff, while the injured were students who were on campus for classes.
The university said its campus and surrounding areas had been targeted twice on Sunday. Gaza’s Education Ministry condemned the attack, saying students had been present for classes when the strike took place.
The ministry said 10 students and educators had been killed by Israeli fire over the preceding six days. It also said around 95 per cent of buildings belonging to academic institutions in Gaza had been damaged during the war.
The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas military wing operative in the area. It added that the strike had been diverted after the presence of civilians was identified, in an effort to reduce harm to bystanders. The military said the incident was under review but did not clarify whether the three people killed at the university were struck accidentally.
More deaths reported across Gaza
The strike came amid continued violence across the Gaza Strip despite a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025.
Gaza’s civil defence agency initially reported four additional deaths in separate incidents on Sunday. Reports from other sources put the number at five, highlighting differences in the initial casualty accounts.
The attacks have renewed concerns over the impact of the conflict on Gaza’s education sector. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), nearly 95 per cent of higher education campuses in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed since the war began in October 2023. The ceasefire has failed to end the violence, with Israel and Hamas continuing to accuse each other of violations. The truce followed two years of war triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
