New Delhi: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited conducted 3,651 inspections across its fuel retail network in July 2026 to check ethanol-blended petrol
and look for possible quality problems. The exercise covered regular field visits, surprise checks and inspections by its anti-adulteration team.
HPCL said it found no cases of adulteration, contamination, major quality lapses or other critical irregularities during the reporting period. For motorists, the checks matter as India increases the use of ethanol-blended petrol and questions continue around fuel quality, blend levels and compatibility with older vehicles.
HPCL inspection drive:
Between July 7 and July 13, field officers carried out 2,173 surprise inspections at fuel stations.
The company conducted another 1,385 regular inspections between July 3 and July 13. Its Quality Assurance Cell completed 93 separate surprise checks.
HPCL also tested 49 fuel samples through mobile laboratories.

Why ethanol quality checks are important
Ethanol can absorb moisture, making correct storage and handling particularly relevant during the monsoon. Fuel quality can suffer if water enters underground tanks or if petrol is stored poorly.
Checks at retail outlets can examine whether the fuel meets the required blend and quality standards. They may also help identify contamination before it reaches a vehicle’s tank.
For car and motorcycle owners, poor-quality fuel can lead to rough running, starting trouble, reduced performance and damage to some fuel-system parts.
No violations found during the checks
HPCL said the inspections and sample tests found no quality compliance failures across the outlets covered. The company uses field inspections, surprise visits, laboratory testing and mobile labs as part of its fuel monitoring system.
