New Delhi: Mumbai residents finally got a break from the relentless, suffocating summer heat on Sunday morning as sudden heavy pre-monsoon showers hit
several parts of the city and its suburbs, completely changing the weather. The downpour started around 5:00 AM with heavy rainfall in the western suburbs including areas like Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Vile Parle and Santacruz.
The unexpected rain has brought down temperatures significantly, bringing a refreshing breeze to Mumbaikars who have been struggling with intense humidity and high temperatures over the last few weeks.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this sudden weather shift is happening because the southwest monsoon is steadily gaining strength along the southern and western coasts of the country.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued a yellow alert for the financial capital, Thane, and Palghar districts after a sudden change in weather. The weather officials warned that these areas are highly likely to see thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and strong, gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph. The residents have also been advised to take basic precautions while stepping out as the intensity of the rain could pick up through the day.

Mumbai is expected to remain mostly cloudy with intermittent rain showers throughout the day. The air will likely stay quite humid but the regular, cool showers will keep the temperature under control.
The IMD also noted that the thunderstorm activity isn’t just restricted to Mumbai infact the regions like North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are also under threat of lightning and sudden downpours.
Meanwhile, other major cities down south are seeing similar shifts with Bengaluru and Chennai tracking light to moderate rainfall while Hyderabad might experience evening thunderstorms.
Weather predictions for the coming days
The weather department expects Mumbai to see light to moderate showers for at least three consecutive days starting Sunday. The yellow alert expands on Monday and Tuesday covering broader parts of the Konkan region including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg which are all bracing for heavy thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the intense heatwave in the Vidarbha region has also started breaking up. The heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed Buldhana district on Sunday morning, while areas around Bhandara experienced pre-monsoon lightning and thunder after enduring scorching temperatures of up to 45°C.
With the monsoon rapidly advancing towards the Kerala coast slightly ahead of its normal June 1 schedule, more widespread rain is expected across the state in the coming week.
