NEW DELHI: Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshiswept the major individual honours at IPL 2026 even as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched the title.
The 15-year-old kid created history by winning 5 individual awards after the tournament, becoming the first to do so.
He won the Orange Cap for being the highest run-getter of the tournament, was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season and also bagged the Super Sixes award for the season. Sooryavanshi also broke Chris Gayle’s 14-year-old record for the most sixes in a season, by hitting 72 sixes in IPL 2026.
Speaking about the young sensation, who has taken world cricket by storm with his batting exploits, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board is planning to do everything it will take to bring him to the highest level. Lauding the 15-year-old, Saikia also predicted a bright future for Sooryavanshi.
“He is a wonderful player coming up, and he has a bright future, and BCCI will do everything to get him to the highest level of cricket,” Saikia said when asked about Sooryavanshi.
Sooryavanshi enjoyed a stellar season for the Rajasthan Royals, smashing multiple records with the bat. He produced some impactful knocks to play a key role in helping RR reach Qualifier 2, where they went down against the Gujarat Titans to miss out on a spot in the IPL 2026 final. The Baby Boss also played a great knock of 97 runs in 29 balls against SRH, nearly breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest century off 30 balls.
During the post-match presentation of the IPL finals, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said, “It feels good. but I’m feeling pressure as I have come here for an interview. I’ll try to work hard and improve my performance next season.”
Devajit Saikia wants Indian women’s team to repeat history
BCCI secretary Saikia also spoke about the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 and urged the Indian women’s team to repeat history. India won their maiden ODI World Cup title last year, and the BCCI secretary is hopeful that Harmanpreet & Co. will continue their stellar run in the tournament to bring the trophy home once again.
The Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 will be held in England & Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026. India are part of Group A in the 12-team competition alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands and Bangladesh. The final of the tournament will be played at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.
“That is the most challenging thing which is coming up within the next couple of days, so I wish they are already doing well, already won one of the match out of two and I hope they will also repeat what performance they have done last year in India,” BCCI Secretary, Saikia said about the Indian women’s team ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
