New Delhi: Leaders of 23 opposition parties are set to meet in New Delhi today for an important INDIA bloc meeting aimed at strengthening coordination
and charting the alliance’s political strategy ahead of upcoming elections.
The meeting at the Constitution Club comes at a challenging time for the opposition coalition, with several alliance partners facing political setbacks after recent Assembly elections and differences emerging among constituent parties in various states.
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said 23 political parties have confirmed their participation in the meeting.
In a post on X, Ramesh said the alliance remains united despite diversity among its members and differences over certain issues.
“Like India, the INDIA Janbandhan continues to stand united through its diversity,” he said.
Mamata Banerjee arrives in Delhi
Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached Delhi on Sunday to attend the meeting. Senior TMC leaders Dola Sen and Kalyan Banerjee accompanied her to Kolkata airport before her departure.
The gathering is particularly significant for the TMC as it is the first major INDIA bloc meeting after the party suffered a setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The BJP’s strong performance in the state has triggered political debate and reports of unease within the party.
Alliance faces internal differences
The meeting will take place amid visible tensions between some opposition partners.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has decided to stay away from the gathering. The party is unhappy with the Congress for extending support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Congress had contested the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance and won five seats.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has also expressed concerns over remarks made by Congress leaders during the Kerala Assembly election campaign. However, the party will participate in the meeting and will be represented by Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas.
The alliance has also witnessed the exit of some partners, including the Aam Aadmi Party, raising fresh questions about opposition unity.
Why the meeting is important
Opposition leaders are expected to discuss ways to counter the BJP’s growing political influence across the country. The BJP has expanded its footprint in several states and recently secured major electoral victories, including in Delhi and West Bengal.
The meeting is also expected to focus on strengthening coordination among alliance partners and renewing their commitment to working together on national issues.
Leaders may discuss a more effective organisational structure and a clearer mechanism for decision-making ahead of upcoming Assembly elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
With several regional parties seeking a greater role in the alliance, the discussions are likely to focus on improving communication and presenting a more united opposition front against the BJP.
The outcome of the meeting will be closely watched as the opposition attempts to rebuild momentum and address internal challenges ahead of future electoral contests.
