How to care for plants during monsoon season
1. Prevent waterlogging at all costs
If there’s one rule every gardener should follow during the monsoon, it’s this: never let your plants sit in stagnant water. Heavy rainfall often saturates the soil, preventing roots from getting the oxygen they need. This can lead to root rot, yellowing leaves, drooping stems and eventually plant death.
To improve drainage:
- Ensure pots have clear drainage holes.
- Elevate containers using bricks, pot stands or wooden blocks.
- Empty water collected in saucers after rainfall.
- In garden beds, create shallow drainage channels to divert excess water away from plant roots.
2. Water less, not more
One of the biggest mistakes people make during the rainy season is sticking to their regular watering schedule.
Before watering, check the soil by inserting your finger about an inch deep. If it still feels moist, skip watering for the day. Remember, high humidity and regular showers reduce a plant’s water requirements significantly, especially for indoor plants.
