New Delhi: Sarees, one of the important garments of Indian women, have been intricately intertwined with the culture and heritage of our nation.

women are lining up in front of the KSRTC Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) showrooms in Karnataka’s Mysuru city to buy the highly sought-after pure Mysore silk sarees. Even though the showroom opens at 10 am, women have been arriving since 4 am, holding tokens and waiting.
The demand for Mysore silk sarees
Mysore silk sarees, priced from Rs 23,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh, are expensive but highly sought after for their quality, purity, and heritage value. KSIC, the only authorized producer of Mysore silk to have received the GI tag (Geographical Indication Tag), continued to face supply shortages in 2025, and the situation shows no signs of improvement in 2026.
The low supply of Mysore silk sarees
The number of skilled weavers and craftsmen in the organization is low, and it takes six to seven months for a weaver to receive at least basic training. This makes it impossible to increase production quickly. The demand for sarees increases further during weddings, Varalakshmi Puja, Gauri Ganesh festival, and Diwali festivals, so sarees are selling out in showrooms within hours. Thus, even if a person goes to the showroom early in the morning and stands there, only one saree is being sold to one customer.
KSIC products maintain consumer confidence
According to videos, women could be seen queuing outside a showroom for sarees. Notably, KSIC sarees are equipped with a unique code and hologram, and 100 percent pure gold thread is used. Amid rising allegations of counterfeit and artificial silk sales in the private sector, the purity of KSIC products still maintains the confidence of the consumer. The Mysore silk saree remains a symbol of heritage to women to this day. That is why women still stand in queues to buy a saree, no matter how expensive it is.
