New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a 636-page chargesheet against model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh
and mother-in-law Giribala Singh, detailing allegations of sustained mental cruelty, financial pressure and the events leading up to her death in Bhopal on May 12. The chargesheet names the two under provisions relating to cruelty by a husband or his relatives, abetment of suicide and common intention.
One of the key aspects of the investigation is a financial dispute involving investments worth around Rs 20 lakh in Twisha’s demat account. According to the CBI, Samarth and Giribala allegedly pressured her to transfer the money to a joint account so that it could be invested in the Chinese stock market. A joint bank account in the names of Twisha and Samarth was opened at the State Bank of India’s Bagmugaliya branch on April 7, the chargesheet reportedly states. Twisha allegedly refused to transfer the money, saying it belonged to her father.
What happened in the final hours?
The financial dispute allegedly resurfaced on May 12, the day Twisha died. The chargesheet says that at around 7:51 pm, she spoke to her sister-in-law and complained that Samarth was pressuring her to transfer the Rs 20 lakh for investment in Chinese stocks. She allegedly refused to do so.
The CBI has also reconstructed a series of events from the final hours of her life. Twisha had reportedly decided to leave Bhopal and return to her family. She had asked her mother for money for a train ticket to Nasirabad in Rajasthan and had told relatives that she had tried to save the marriage but wanted to leave.
The chargesheet also records her final communications. At around 9:20 pm, she reportedly called her sister-in-law while crying. Minutes later, at 9:36 pm, she sent a message asking her to tell Samarth to collect her belongings and saying she wanted to be left in peace. She was later found dead at the marital home.
CBI alleges months of mental cruelty
The chargesheet describes what investigators allege was a prolonged period of psychological and mental cruelty during Twisha’s marriage. The agency has also examined disputes surrounding her pregnancy, allegations of derogatory remarks about her character and disagreements within the family. According to the CBI, Giribala allegedly encouraged Samarth’s conduct and shielded him from complaints made by Twisha.
The case has also seen a dispute over the circumstances of Twisha’s death. Her family has alleged that she was murdered and has expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s chargesheet. However, a second post-mortem conducted by an AIIMS Delhi medical board concluded that she died by suicide through hanging and found no injuries suggesting assault or a struggle.
The CBI’s chargesheet therefore places the alleged financial pressure, marital conflict and claims of sustained mental cruelty within the broader circumstances preceding Twisha’s death. The agency also continues to examine other aspects of the case, including digital and other forensic evidence.
