New Delhi: US President Donald Trump signed an agreement to extend the ceasefire with Iran in France’s Palace of Versailles, just outside Paris. The 14-point
agreement, called a Memorandum of Understanding, was signed at a post-G7 dinner in Versailles, where Trump was joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The document is formally titled the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The agreement establishes a 60-day framework for both sides to negotiate a comprehensive final settlement. During this period, neither country is expected to take steps that could undermine the talks.
While the peace deal coming through after months of negotiations was welcomed the world over, another thing that caught the eye of many observers was the symbolic importance of the treaty being signed at the Palace of Versailles, a place which is not new to such treaties being signed.
Versailles’ history of treaties
The Palace of Versailles is one of the most historically significant monuments in France, located in Versailles in the Yvelines department of the country. It served as the principal residence of the French kings Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. The palace exerted major influence across Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries in architecture and the decorative arts.
What the palace is most well known for perhaps and the reason its name stays evergreen in the public consciousness is that it is the place where the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 was signed, in its Hall of Mirrors after World War I.
The treaty formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers, redrew borders across Europe, imposed military restrictions and reparations on Germany, and established the League of Nations. The harsh provisions of the Treaty fuelled resentment in Germany and many attribute them as part of reasons that eventually led to World War II.
As a result, the 1919 Treaty of Versailles remains one of the most consequential and debated diplomatic agreements in modern history, and the name of the palace remains forever associated with it.
Versailles has hosted other important diplomatic agreements as well. In the 18th century, a series of treaties known collectively as the Treaties of Versailles were signed there, including the 1756 alliance between France and Austria that reshaped European power politics ahead of the Seven Years’ War.
The palace was also used for major state receptions, peace negotiations, and international gatherings by French monarchs and later French governments, and it continues to do so, and in the present case of the Iran-US peace deal being signed there by US President Donald Trump.
