New Delhi: Sawan brings rainy days, festive rituals and a change in the way many households plan their meals. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sawan 2026 began
on July 30 and will continue till August 28, with Sawan Somvars falling on August 3, 10, 17 and 24. For devotees observing vrat, meals often centre on simple, fresh and sattvik ingredients, although fasting rules vary between families and regions.
Paneer is particularly useful in such meals because it is filling, versatile and pairs well with ingredients commonly used during vrat. It can be turned into a refreshing salad, a wholesome roll or a more indulgent festive snack without making the meal unnecessarily heavy. If you are looking for something beyond the usual boiled potatoes and fruit, these paneer preparations can bring some variety to your Sawan menu.
Sattvik paneer recipes for Sawan vrat
Fresh paneer and pomegranate salad
This no-fuss salad works well when you want something light and refreshing during humid monsoon days.
Ingredients
- 200g fresh cubed paneer
- 1 cup pomegranate arils
- 1 small cucumber, diced
- ½ cup tender coconut flesh, chopped
- 2 tbsp toasted almonds, chopped
- 2 tbsp thick yoghurt
- ½ tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tsp lime juice
- 1 tbsp chopped coriander or mint
- Sendha namak, to taste
- A pinch of black pepper, if permitted
- 1 tsp raw honey, optional and subject to family fasting rules
Method
Combine paneer, pomegranate, cucumber, tender coconut, almonds and herbs in a bowl. Whisk yoghurt with cumin powder, lime juice, sendha namak, pepper and honey. Pour over the salad and toss gently. Chill for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Paneer and lauki rolls
Soft vrat-friendly rotis wrapped around a mildly spiced paneer and lauki filling make these rolls both satisfying and easy to serve.
Ingredients for filling
- 250g fresh crumbled paneer
- 1 cup grated lauki
- 1 tsp ghee
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- 2 tbsp roasted and crushed peanuts
- 2 tbsp chopped coriander
- ½ tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tsp lime juice
- Sendha namak, to taste
Ingredients for assembling
- 4 small singhara or kuttu rotis
- Fresh coriander, for garnish
Method
Squeeze excess water from the grated lauki. Heat ghee and lightly sauté ginger before adding lauki. Cook for 5-7 minutes until most of the moisture disappears. Cool slightly, then mix in paneer, peanuts, coriander, cumin, lime juice and sendha namak. Warm the rotis on a tawa and place the filling in the centre. Roll tightly, garnish with coriander and serve warm.
Paneer-stuffed sweet potato boats
Sweet potatoes bring natural sweetness to this filling preparation, while paneer and roasted peanuts add texture and make it more substantial.
Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes
- 200g fresh paneer, crumbled
- 2 tbsp roasted peanuts, crushed
- 1 tbsp thick yoghurt, optional
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- 1 tbsp chopped coriander
- ½ tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds
- 1 tsp ghee
- Juice of ½ lime
- Sendha namak, to taste
Method
Wash and prick the sweet potatoes before rubbing them lightly with ghee. Bake at 200°C for 40-50 minutes until tender. Once slightly cool, slice them lengthwise and scoop out some flesh while keeping the shells intact.
Mix the scooped sweet potato with paneer, peanuts, yoghurt, ginger, coriander, cumin, lime juice and sendha namak. Fill the potato shells and top with pumpkin seeds. Bake again for 10–12 minutes until lightly golden. Serve warm.
Sawan meals do not have to feel repetitive. With a few vrat-friendly ingredients and some creativity, paneer can become the base for refreshing, wholesome and festive preparations that make monsoon fasting a little more enjoyable.
