Almora: India and Japan have once again come together for their annual military exercise, Dharma Guardian 2026. The 7th edition of this joint drill is being
conducted at Chaubattia in Uttarakhand from February 24 to March 9, 2026.
The exercise is part of the growing defence partnership between the two countries, aimed at improving coordination and operational readiness.

Focuses on joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations
This year’s exercise focuses on joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations. Over two weeks, troops from both nations will refine planning, synchronise tactical drills, and practise specialised combat skills. Activities include establishing temporary operating bases, developing intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance (ISR) grids, setting up mobile check posts, conducting cordon-and-search operations, heliborne missions, and house intervention drills.
Army personnel from battalion of the Madras Regiment
The Indian Army contingent consists of around 120 personnel, mainly from a battalion of the Madras Regiment, supported by other arms and services. The Japanese contingent includes troops from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Together, they will share operational experiences and learn from each other’s combat techniques in built-up areas.
The exercise is conducted alternately in India and Japan. Last year, the 6th edition was held at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan. This rotation ensures that both armies gain exposure to different terrains and operational environments, enhancing their adaptability and preparedness.
Dharma Guardian 2026 carries strategic importance
Beyond tactical drills, Dharma Guardian 2026 carries strategic importance. It reflects the deepening defence ties between India and Japan, who share common concerns about regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
