Mumbai: The BSE Sensex declined 139.68 points to 84,419.97 on Thursday. The NSE Nifty went down 44.80 points to 25,773.75. The equity benchmark indices
traded lower amid weaker trend in global markets.
In a sigh of relief for domestic investors, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 1,171.71 crore on Wednesday. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) pumped in Rs 768.94 crore to buy equities.
“On the institutional front, FIIs turned net buyers on December 17 after remaining sellers for the previous 14 sessions, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,171 crore, while DIIs also remained supportive with net buying of Rs 768 crore,” Amruta Shinde, Technical & Derivative Analyst at Choice Equity Broking Private Limited, told PTI.
Shinde added that market players are expected to make their moves after closely following global equity trends, crude oil price movements, and institutional fund flows for incremental direction during the session.
Laggards and Gainers from Sensex
Laggards from the Sensex pack included, Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, Bharat Electronics, Maruti, Sun Pharma, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. Gainers from the barometer: Tech Mahindra, ITC, HCL Tech, and Tata Consultancy Services.
Global stock markets
Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, South Korea’s Kospi, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index traded lower, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite index traded in positive territory. The US stock markets settle lower on Wednesday. Brent crude jumped 0.65 per cent to USD 60.07 per barrel.
“Global markets enter today’s session on a cautious footing following a sharp overnight sell-off in the US. The S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow extended their losing streak as investors booked profits in high-valuation technology and AI stocks.
“Investor sentiment also remains cautious ahead of the release of US consumer price inflation data, with divided views in the market over the future trajectory of monetary policy, prompting participants to stay defensive and avoid aggressive positioning,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, told PTI.
On December 17, 2025, the BSE barometer edged lower by 120.21 points to finish at 84,559.65. The 50-share Nifty slumped by 41.55 points to end at 25,818.55.
