New Delhi: The ongoing Amarnath Yatra 2026 has been temporarily suspended following severe weather warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department
(IMD). Keeping the safety of pilgrims in mind, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has suspended the pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine through both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes from July 19.
Senior officials confirmed that the precautionary decision was taken due to the threat of heavy rainfall, landslides and flash floods in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have stated that the safety of devotees remains the top priority during the challenging weather conditions.
Pilgrims asked to remain at base camps
According to the administration’s decision, no pilgrims will be allowed to move towards the holy cave from the Baltal Base Camp and Nunwan-Chandanwari Base Camp from July 19.
Devotees who have already reached the base camps have been advised to stay at their respective locations and strictly follow the instructions issued by local authorities. The Yatra Management Committee has said that the condition of the pilgrimage routes will be reviewed once the weather improves, following which a decision on resuming the Yatra will be announced.
Landslide and flash flood risks increase
Officials said that continuous rainfall has increased the possibility of landslides, rockfalls and flash floods in several mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The suspension has been implemented as a precautionary step to prevent any risk to pilgrims travelling along the difficult and steep routes.
The administration has assured devotees that there is no need to panic and that weather conditions are being monitored closely. The date for restarting the pilgrimage will be announced after a detailed assessment of route safety.
Officials urge devotees to follow official updates
Authorities have appealed to all pilgrims to rely only on official updates from the local administration and the Yatra Management Committee (SASB). Devotees currently in Jammu and Kashmir have been requested to cooperate with officials and follow all safety guidelines.
The decision to temporarily halt the Amarnath Yatra has been taken purely as a safety measure amid adverse weather conditions, with authorities prioritising the well-being of thousands of pilgrims visiting the holy shrine.
