New Delhi: Social media platform X has blocked around 3,500 posts and deleted more than 600 accounts after the Centre flagged obscene content on the platform,
according to sources.
The X has reportedly assured the government that it will not allow obscene imagery going forward and will comply with Indian laws and regulations.
Notice by Centre to X
The action follows a notice issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on January 2, seeking an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours after objectionable content was detected on the platform.
X submitted an initial response, but the ministry was not satisfied and issued a follow-up notice. In its latest reply, X acknowledged its lapse and outlined the steps taken, including content takedowns and account deletions.
Grok restricts image generation
The government has maintained that social media intermediaries must adhere strictly to Indian law and act promptly against unlawful and obscene content.
Meanwhile, the X has limited the image generation to its paid subscribers only. Grok has told users asking it to alter images uploaded to X that “image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers”, adding users “can subscribe to unlock these features”.
